Difficult decision but I would agree with this. Messi is a one off, an opportunity never to be repeated. He would light up the Premier League and elevate us at a stroke to a new level. And we can sign another Haaland in a year or two anyway.

Haaland - it's not even close. Haaland is on the cusp of possibly becoming the best player in the world - and at 22 he has a decade plus of greatness ahead of him.

Messi is currently the best player in the world - and indeed the GOAT - IMO. But at 33, his career is coming to an end.

In the best of worlds, I'd love to sign both of them - but if it's one or the other, it's not close - Haaland by a country fucking mile!

Is he really a pep type of player don't get me wrong the kid scores goals for fun and would love to see him in a city shirt but I genuinely would be surprised if we sign him.

I feel like “contract length to be the same” isn’t viable really (although appreciate this is hypothetical). Ultimately, contract length is the biggest deciding factor for me.

If we were signing a young player like Haaland, you’d want to tie him down for at least 4 years, not 2 years. But if you were signing Messi, on his wages, with his age and the needs of the squad, any more than 2 years would be unwise. I’m not including CFG entities for this purpose, as can see Messi playing another 3 seasons in the USA or similar, but I only care about our club.

On pure ability and experience alone, Messi would hit the ground running next season and I’d love to sign him. But that’s not what we need: we need someone for the next 4-5 years (and hopefully longer!) to replace Sergio, and we absolutely need a striker. So Haaland for me all day, it’s a no brainer
