HAMBURG!!

Im pretty pleased with this, we are a much stronger side than we was last we played and i also think we tend to up our game against better opposition specialy at COMS .. we just have to be confident and i hope last nighte near miss will give em a kick in the dick and make em realise they are in with a chance now but there are no easy rides ..

I knew as soon as they came out it would be us, we played that friendly earlier in season and if im right we lost 2-0

We lost 1-0 away, which was the start of our preseason (which is funny since our season already started with having to qualify for UEFA). We lost 1-0 away to them, deep into their preseason, while we were still gelling, with a far weaker side.

I'm not as worried as some, when we play at our best, we can take the game to anyone.

The Match

This was Hamburg SV’s final warm-up game on home soil, they travel to London next week for the Emirates Cup. There was a familiar face at the entrance to this well-appointed stadium – Kevin Keegan’s time here in the late 1970s is marked with a huge photo alongside local hero Uwe Seeler.

Vedran Corluka and Elano made their first appearances under Mark Hughes, as did Felipe Caicedo. The big Ecuadorian made his first start for City, having only made substitute appearances since his arrival in late January.

There was a healthy smattering of City fans braving temperatures in the high 80s, and some housed in one of the ground’s two standing sections.

The home fans gave Didi Hamann a great ovation when his name was read out off the team sheet just before kick-off.

City, playing in the red-and-black away kit, absorbed a lot of pressure early on, with the highly-rated van der Vaart keeping Dunne & Richards on their toes. Pitroipa fired the first shot in anger after five minutes, his low drive being easily smothered by Hart.

It was Pitroipa who opened the scoring after 16 minutes, the midfielder from Burkina Faso taking advantage when Richard Dunne could not control a deflected ball in from the right. Pitroipa steadied himself and rolled it in beyond Hart’s right hand.

Pitroipa and Dunne were involved in the action again six minutes later, the City skipper got caught in possession in the area but thankfully the HSV man dithered and failed to find any of his team mates inside the area. Elano chanced his arm from distance a minute later, but his shot flew a long way over the bar.

City’s best chance so far came on the half hour. Stephen Ireland found Felipe Caicedo, who forced HSV keeper Rost out to the edge of the box. The Ecuadorian laid it off to Corluka, but with Rost scrambling back Corluka’s cross was headed away at the last second.

The lively Pitroipa was in the thick of it two minutes later, his flying volley from a floated free kick going over the City crossbar. On the 38 minutes he burst into the box and crossed, but Dunne headed it behind, off a HSV player, in the nick of time. Seconds later, Pitroipa hit a rasping, left-footed volley that flew just over the crossbar.

City made one change at the break, Schmeichel replacing Hart in goal.

Caicedo got into a good position on the edge of the box on 55 minutes, but with Ireland moving into space ahead of him, HSV’s defence closed the striker down the opportunity evaporated.

Martin Petrov went close on 65 minutes, drilling a left-footed shot from the corner of the HSV area just inches wide with Rost some way away from it. Seconds later Ched Evans & Kelvin Etuhu replaced Ireland and Caicedo. They had only just come on when Guerrero shot just past Schmeichel’s right hand post.

Onuoha replaced Corluka on 70 minutes. Just afterwards, Schmeichel made a fine save pushing away Ben-Hatira’s fierce drive from the edge of the box. De Jong’s header from a corner was deflected over by Dunne seconds later, then Didi Hamann replaced Gelson Fernandes, the German favourite receiving another nice ovation from the home fans.

The young City keeper made another good stop, this time with his feet, just before the end to deny de Jong, although he was unaware that the HSV man was offside. As time ran out Petrov had a good shooting chance from outside the box, but the Bulgarian’s shot bobbled well wide of Rost’s hand post.

The game petered out as the energy-sapping conditions took their toll, but manager Mark Hughes will be pleased that he has seen a few more players in match action as he ponders his options for the second leg of the UEFA Cup tie versus EB/Streymur this Thursday.

They play a pretty open style of play and their defence isn't great, so i can see us scoring away from home. I'd much rather play them than some stuffy Italian or Eastern European team.

Nice to have the away leg first..Good stadium, should be plenty of tickets?? great night out in the 'Reeperbahn' area, Happy days..C'mon City!!!

tough one obviously but think of it this way, we have got them and lots are shitting it saying we are gonna lose. We are the favourites and they now that. if there was one team they wouldnt off wanted to draw it would be us, as we have vinnie and dejong. They will be thiking exactly the same as us, shitting it! Think the game will be a cracker! CTID

I have just signed in on this site to say hello!

Thats a great draw for Hamburg. :)

City is absolutly beatable for HSV. Better than some team from eastern europe.
Hopefully Mladen Petric will return from his injury.

Pitty that Hamburg will face City first home-side, but hands down, Hamburg ist the only team in Cup who has won every single away match. Galatasaray was a might at home too, nevertheless they lost.

Without any upcoming injuries Jol will send his best squad on the green: (Aside from Benjamin, because Boateng is booked)

-------------------Rost--------------------
--Benjamin---Graavgard---Mathijsen--Aogo--
------------Jarolim-------Alex Silva--------
--Trochowski------------------Jansen------
------------Petric-------Olic---------------

Facts about Hamburger SV:

4th in Bundesliga, is tied with the second.
Stands in semi finals of national Cup.
Topscorer:
Mladen Petric - 10 goals - 4 Assists (UEFA Cup 5 Goals and 4 Assists)
Ivicia Olic - 7 Goals - 2 Assists (UEFA Cup 7 Goals and 1 Assist)
Paolo Guerrero - 6 Goals - 5 Assists (UEFA Cup 2 Goals and 1 Assist)
Piotr Trochowski - 5 Goals - 7 Assists (UEFA Cup 1 Goal and 2 Assists)

Looking forward to this match. Guess it will be a tough and tight fight over 180min.

Greetings from Hamburg

We should win tbh but you never know with City, if we do get through I think it'll be another last minute goal / extra time / pens job as usual. Bring it on!!
