Hansen, Lawrensen and Shearer bring shame on the BBC

Oh God.

If all else fails play the racism card.

if you seriously believe that if mario was english and white he'd get the same treatment from these pricks then you probably also believe in the tooth fairy and the easter bunny. in less than four years andy carroll has got a criminal record for beating up a woman, glassing a bloke in a club and most recently was fined and had to pay compensation for common assault. on top of that his form for almost all of last season was total shite. so why then does he get a far, far easier ride than mario from those twats on motd?

I'm not sure whether his being black is the issue but if he were English he'd definitely get an easier ride. The evidence is there for all to see. He'd get an even easier ride than that if he played for the rags or bin dippers too.

If you had to decide which character to pick on to get ratings would you:

a) Choose a so so player with a nasty streak.

or

b) a cracking player with some funny but 'safe for TV' stories?

The only news the likes of Carrol and Barton are worthy of is the 10.00 pm criminal stories. Mario provides entertainment.

The discriminatory behaviour and character assassination of Mario by Hansen, Lawrenson, Shearer and Mowbray is a fight worth fighting. Why be defeatist and do nothing?

My points have still not been answered satisfactorily by the BBC in two complaints, but even though they don’t admit it, the BBC’s Footy coverage could be changing for the better. We’ll see.

Would I complain again if needed? Of course.

I suspect that the volume of complaints about their behaviour has and will make a difference. The coverage was more balanced in the Semi and Final, even if Hansen, Lawrenson and Mowbray didn’t change their behaviour. Shearer did improve, though he failed to apologise (I won’t hold my breath there).

Rooney and Carroll were not subjected to the same abuse, and, as has been pointed out, their charge sheet is far worse than anything Mario has ever done. You wouldn’t believe that Mario had had a good tournament the way they were talking. Compare his contribution to Rooney’s. Mario scored more goals than Carroll and Rooney put together. I suspect racist attitudes in the behaviour of Hansen, Lawrenson, Shearer and Mowbray.

I don’t have a problem with people who don’t agree with that.

I will say that it is easy to slag people off who have bothered to complain. Anyone can do that.

It is much harder to do something constructive, and make a difference.

Anyone who can read the article below and think there is nothing to be concerned about, must either really hate Mario or be Mark Lawrenson.

Class. At least when I wrote about Mario, it was City's title hopes that were at the forefront of my concerns. That lot on MOTD are simply bullying a man they clearly know nothing about.

You have to laugh at the clumsy and melodramatic lunge for the moral high ground.

You're a bunch of young, one-eyed football fans on a forum. Your kind are waging futile wars on forums on all subjects all over the land.

One of our players acts the fool quite regularly and gets bad press for it. That's how sections of the press are, they characature. If you watch them or read them then you are part of the problem.

You are not going to change it one iota. The only person who can change it is Mario Balotelli. Every time he does this he moves things in the right direction:

It's simple.

No mate I neither hate him, my name is not Mark Lawrenson and neither am I a retarded idiot I just share a different opinion as I doubt the criticism is a racist slant. As for that article it portrays one side of a story and I quote:

"Match of the Day recently broadcast an interview with Balotelli where most of the press stories about him were shown to be false. Why did that not change attitudes towards him?"

The stories in question which were dispelled, were positive stories made up by the press (so its not always one-sided) such as Giving a tramp £1000, taking a lad to school after being bullied, put a £1000 in a christmas collection box, paying for everyone petrol, buying a round of drinks in a pub in Wythenshawe so I cannot work out why that would possibly change perceptions positively as suggested by the article. Furthermore the comparison to Andy Carroll, Ryan Giggs etc is pointless as stuff of a private nature will not be refferred to in the context of a football match on MOTD. The comparison is completely irrelevant. As Rooney past indiscretions with escort girls are not mentioned neither has Marios been with the same girl.

I thought the opinion of Lawrenson was wrong, but lets face it Mario does split opinions whether amongst the MOTD team or amongst City fans. To categorise someone as racist for not liking a player is wrong, particularly when no evidence supports it.

I rest my case.

As I've said, my complaint wasn't about racism, but about a crap format, Shearer's uninformed comment about non achievement and Lawrenson's crap punditry and supposed witty quips when he's co commentating

The reply I had back was the standard one about Balotelli being a controversial character, so I replied to say that I was miffed as all the BBC complaints had done was send out a standard reply and they hadn't addressed any of my complaints and I hadn't complained about any unfair treatment of Balotelli

I've received this back today

Thanks for your further contact regarding ‘Match Of The Day Live: England v Italy’ broadcast on BBC One.

I understand you are unhappy with the previous response you received as it didn’t address your specific concerns. I note that you felt the quality of the commentary and punditry was poor, especially Alan Shearer and Mark Lawrenson, during the match.

I’m sorry you were sent an incorrect response originally. This was due to an admin error.

Our Euro 2012 team included a line-up of ex-professionals and football experts. The aim of our commentary and studio team was to give our audience useful information and context to the matches we covered.

This year, our line-up included talent such as Alan Shearer, Lee Dixon, Clarence Seedorf Jurgen Klinsmann, Mark Lawrenson, Niall Quinn and Martin Keown.

Over the course of our coverage, we did try and convey information we felt would be of value. It's in the nature of commentating and punditry that contributors are expected to provide their personal view on the action and events surrounding the sport they're watching. All we can expect of them is a fair assessment based on their knowledge and experience. We do however employ different commentators, pundits and sports reporters to provide as wide a range of views as we can. However we acknowledge that not everyone enjoyed the commentary or punditry we offered. In addition, with such a wide and diverse audience it is inevitable that not everyone will agree with our choice of pundits and commentators, which is in the nature of broadcasting whereby we are serving a wide and diverse audience.

We felt that the diversity of the team itself has added valuable perspective as well as balance across what has been a competition which has provoked a passionate response overall.

Nevertheless, we’re guided by the feedback we receive and I can assure you I've registered your complaint on our audience log. This is a daily report of audience feedback that's made available to all BBC staff, including members of the BBC Executive Board, channel controllers and other senior managers.

The audience logs are seen as important documents that can help shape decisions about future programming and content.

Thanks for taking the time to contact us.

I'm even more pissed off now that they've admitted it was a standard reply, or as they call it "admin error"
However, as someone earlier in the thread has pointed out, they've missed Hansen off the "talent" list even though they've included Lawrenson, but I'd love to know how they justify the crap puns Lawrenson comes out with as "a view" or "fair assessment"
There is hope though as all the complaints are logged and are made available to the management
