Happy 5-1 day

I am also one of the handful of BM posters who saw the likes of Bert, Joe Hayes, Bobby Johnstone & Co play for City (I think there must be more than a handful though). Unfortunately the team was on the wane by the time I was first taken to Maine Road by my Dad. Still going regularly now, in my mid-70's and one of the SC-holding FOC's that the club hierarchy seemingly wants to be rid of.
Keep Going Bill.
Up The Blues.

The results from that game contribute to the "typical City" feeling many of us share. Huddersfield 10- 1 only to lose 0 - 1 in the reverse fixture yet another example.
Whenever City play, my wife comments "Expect the unexpected".
I remember that season very well,my first as a home and away supporter
I was at Maine Rd when City scored TEN went to Leeds Rd for the fa cup match
My first ever fa cup match ,it was bedlam,
I decided not to go to the first replay after the 2-2 draw ....good choice as it turned out nil nil at Maine road.when the 2nd replay date was announced I thought " I'm having that "and back off to Huddersfield we went, midweek, torrential rain all night on the big open away terrace packed with Blues, won 3nil I was so happy! "We're on the march with Machins Army"
Loved those days, when the FA cup really really meant something to all fans
Loved the old Huddersfield ground
Cant remember a thing about the league game away, I would of been there but no memory at all.

Here's another blast from the past Blue Kiwi ;)

Fa cup 4th round ,1955. Maine Road City v utd in front of 75k at Maine Road.Trautmann in goal,Joe Hayes opening the scoring ..

Note the match commentary stating proudly at the start;

" When utd play City,it's utd who usually win "

Apparently this statement was rubbish

A poster in the comments section states ;

" Not true ! ..
Including 1955, league and Cup, it's all square....18-19 in the league and 2- 1City in the Fa Cup '

Just goes to show you have to check every comment made by so called experts...

Amazed to see the crowd packed in like that in the roofless Kippax; all standing.

And I noticed Bert had no number on his shirt. Plenty of other legendary names in the lineup too.

Just watched it again and was buzzing at the commentary
" And it's a goal, it's 2 nil,Manchester City have knocked their neighbours out of the cup ! "

The best derby as a game of football I can ever remember was in the autumn of 1971. City vastly the better team found themselves 0 2 then 1 3 down if my memory serves me. Stepney produced a world class save going into injury time which their was little of in those days. Buzzer banged it in from the resultant corner, two thirds of Maine Rd went wild. Their was barely time to kick off, if ever a draw felt like a win, 14 at the time 69 now, seems like yesterday. Was in the terraced North Stand, not much segregation , but saw little mither.
That's a brilliant bit of history.will try and look it up.

So much to say about this fascinating footage........
I could feel your excitement about the tense finish to the game reading your post,
Then watching the highlights again you can feel the atmosphere...to a degree...
But being there would have bin better!!!!
What a game of football.no wonder you remember it well ; )

That was a breathtaking last 2 minutes....I noticed when Buzzer has his fantastic shot brilliantly saved by Stepney...that George Best , went up to Mike ,who has sunk to his knees almost in despair...and patted him.. obviously they were the best of mates off the pitch,Best was just being gentlemanly and sporting to a close pal.

.But of course Summberbee had not given up yet and had other ideas, scoring the last min equalizer in injury time from Lees adept corner....just goes to show the character and resolve of Buzzer...and that having the talent is one thing ; but refusing to be beaten is another.
What a Great player Mike Summberbee was.

Try playing with a big heavy leather lace-up T- ball, on a mud heap, wearing big heavy leather studded boots. That's why it was 'shite', as you put it. :-)
Imagine heading that sort of ball in games such as "The ballet on ice".
Most of us huddled close together in the Kippax to try to stop freezing to death.

We've got lots of memories of individual games and also travel to / from games. For example, I hired a car to go to the League Cup Final against West Brom and it broke down on the M^. Fortunately very close to a Services and the AA had us back on the road within 30 minutes. Havin my car stolen from outside my girlfriends (now wife) home after driving back from seeing us play West Ham in the last game of the season. What made that worse was I had omitted to set the alarm.
With respect of games - the Denis Law back heel is one of the most vivid. Standing with my sister's boyfriend level with the 6-yard box in the main stand at the end at which he scored. When the rabble started stampeding through the stands we sheltered behind a stanchion. I lived in Gorse Hill at that time about a 10-minutes walk - at the end of the game we trudged along the roads muttering and kicking any litter we could find to pretend we were rags. When at a safe distance we started celebrating.

They had moved to the panelled ball by the time of that Spuds game with a valve replacing the lace. On the other hand though it would still be much heavier than what they play with nowadays.
I played as an amateur in the late '60's and when the pitches were muddy I would avoid heading the ball as much as possible. In fact it was usually only centre halves and centre forwards headed it - the rest of us had more sense :-)
