Harry Kane

£100M transfer, plus £300K/wk for 4yrs is £160M. Beyond that, sponsorships, image rights, etc…

All strikes me as a little ridiculous, but I’d rather the players who play the sport, bring in the fans, and win all the trophies get the money than anyone else. The owners make their money from the increased value of the club, when we win and become an even more attractive commercial property, and the spin-off investments from other activities, like the Arena.

Possibly, but it’s impossible to know. Some players are practically finished at 29-30. I understand that he’s a pretty safe bet, but there is a chance that he just doesn’t fit with how the rest of the team wants to play. It would be pretty devastating if he flops and we’re left with a player on enormous wages with very little resale value. We’d be suffering the consequences for years.

I don’t really have a problem with paying those kind of figures for a player that the club feels is likely to push us forwards. However, I’d be a lot more relaxed if we were paying it for someone quite a bit younger.
How does getting someone younger eradicate the risk of not fitting in?

With only a year left on his contract you can.
Not if he wants to walk on a free to Real Madrid and pocket most of what would have been his transfer fee!

Players are getting smarter and smarter! The very best players can do whatever they want, virtually whenever they want! And, some of them, like KDB, don’t need an over-priced prick of an agent to get it for them!

Sign a four year deal. If you’re unhappy, make it known you’re not going to re-sign, so you can either go after 3 years for cheap or after 4 years with a “mega” deal (Christian Horner-sized for British GP viewers!) of your own making!

Looks like Pogba is about to do this to United AGAIN! But, he “loves” the club, of course! Sell for peanuts, buy back for record transfer fee (100x higher than sale price!) & wages deal for 4 years, then walk away again…unless they let him go NOW…and he will still get an eye watering pay packet!!!

For me, transfer fees are OLDE TYME FOOTBALL and will not be around in 10 years in anything like their current guise.

There needs to be a reasonable level of local country revenue sharing, a FIFA pay cap, and a reduction in ticket prices OR the CL will become a de facto Super League, dominated by the same 16 clubs in about 4-5 countries (England, Spain, Germany, plus maybe a team or two from Italy & France).

Because of the exponential growth of finances and commercial interests amongst the top clubs, they will permanently separate themselves, much as the UEFA clubs tried to do before City & PSG broke down their door!

Domestic leagues will be important, because they keep you in the CL, but only in England are there more than 2 or 3 serious competitors for the title every year, let alone the competition for CL positions! So, with the increased financing from global TV revenues, the top PL teams can have basically TWO TEAMS, with one that ensures the club stays in the Top 4 and plays in the CL, and another that fills in against lower quality opposition, during fixture congestion, and for the domestic cups! And the gap will continue to widen…

To return to your original point about Mbappe…there are literally only a small handful of clubs that could afford him, and even fewer he would choose to play for. That club not only has to have millions in cash to give him, but also compete at the top consistently and provide him with the global exposure he needs to make the REAL MONEY from commercial endorsements!

The gap between the proverbial haves and have nots seems like it’s getting wider every year. It cannot continue unabated.
