Has Manchester lost too many of it's old pubs in town

Mother Macs gone??

seen posts online saying a sign was up with contact booking.com for refunds on reservations made and doors shut over the weekend

Looked like it was shut for refurbishment rather than “gone” when I walked past last week.

I notice The Wheatsheaf, which prompted this thread back in 2017 is still going strong.

The Old Mother Macs went when they renovated it -it was utter shit after that

As an outsider, I think Manchester has a great mix of pubs from traditional real ale pubs to more modern craft beer bars.
One thing that is a shame is some of the big chains taking over the traditional pubs. For example, The Deansgate and The Lass O' Gowrie are now on my "banned" list as I'm not a fan of Greene King.
However, there is so much choice, you can basically pick any area of town and put together a decent pub crawl.

When I lived in C on M I virtually lived in town and went in every boozer and nightclub.

Later years used to go in The Millstone, Mother Macs, Crown and Anchor and The Waldorf but no longer go anywhere near town.

It's all my fault

I was walking the dog down a canal last week. Out in the Peak District. There was an old pub right by the canal. I looked in the window, curious to see who would be in there on a Tuesday night. There were about 10 men in there, aged between 65-75. All rosy cheeked, and having the craic with each other.

I thought to myself. "When those boomers are gone, so are most of the pubs in the country."

Slightly different in the big Cities where there is a large quantity of younger TWATS (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights)

When I started working in an office in town (early 00s) there was a bunch of older blokes who would often go for a pint at lunch time, some pretty much every day. I would go occasionally but found it all a bit odd.

Pubs have been closing down roughly at the same rate those boomers have been kicking the bucket over the last 20 years

Their is a generational thIng about the appeal if pubs. I occasionally like a pub. Boomer men love a pub anytime, My kids (teens) not arsed at all.
