Helen the bell ringer

In the North Stand, Helen Turner had seat 1, row 1, Section N, right behind the middle of the goal. I know, my season ticket was seat 1, row 10, Section N and my big sis was seat 2.

Asa "Hole in the Hartford" and Helen, in her heyday....and his!

What a classic picture the ultimate City fan never spoke to her directly but she always smiled at any young kid that said hello

She sold flowers outside the main entrance to the Royal - all decked out in City rosettes and scarves. She wouldn't ever sell red flowers on her little stall.

Her bell is in the museum (wherever the museum is now). When I first took my son in there he noticed it and asked loads of questions. I went to pieces a bit. I could hear the ding a ling a ling as clear as day when I looked at it. I still expect to hear it at games - that's how integral the sound was to the Maine Rd experience.

Great to read these stories about Helen. Keep them coming!

Didn't quite get the bell thing as a young teenager. But joined in the banter along with the rest of the Kippax choir:

Helen Helen ring your bell, Helen ring your bell
derding derding derding derding derding derding derding derding
yaaahhhyyyy
Helen is a big fat football hooligan, Helen is a big fat football hooligan

(She wasn't a hooligan obviously although she was a bit on the large side).

Maine Road Legend.
RIP

I remember this from when I started going in the mid eighties - top chant!

She was one of the great characters that made this club so great.

Reading that actually made me go cold.

A small part of MCFC died the day she passed on ....... the club was quite simply her life ....... all the players , officials and supporters either knew her or knew of her ...... she lived just off Brunswick Street in Ardwick , and she never missed any City game that she could possibly get to , until ill health finally took its toll on her.

I remember being in the North stand, front row almost behind the goal with a group of Boys brigade lads on a jolly...one of my first games at Maine rd,against Wolves.

Helen started ringing her bell and I remember looking around and thinking "what the....."
She smiled at us and laughed.

We won 4-0.

Great memories.

Usually on Finglands coachs sat at front to away games, nobody ever wanted to be on the same coach because she was very strict and ruined the atmosphere of an away trip, but have to give her vast credit for one trip I `shared` with her to Wolves, got to the ground fairly early and were surrounded before we even got to the coach stop by about 200 of there hoolies all banging the side of the coach, we pulled up ad the driver was unsure about opening the doors, ca`nt remember her exact words but she said open the doors we`re not scared of this lot, se got off first, bell in hand and we all followed, snaking our way through an incredulous band of Wolves fans who were totaly non-plussed by our audacity....I`m not a soft sod but fully expected to get turned over, it was amazing to be honest, she really is a legend. In quiet moments on the terraces it was the custom for the Kippax to sing Helen Helen ring your bell, and she always did, home and away, History really, part of the fabric.....R.I.P.
