High Speed Rail Network

What do you mean by current railway infrastructure exactly? I don't think the transport links between small towns should be a priority as most urban economists seem to think their decline is inevitable anyway.

Government should be targeting the needs of big business first to drive growth. An hour off a journey might not seem like a lot but remember that's two hours out of the working day - it's an even bigger difference if you consider foreigners coming to London on a long-haul flight.

Still the 20year estimate is an absolute joke and HS2 is hardly going to feel cutting edge by then. Whether you like Cameron or not, he is absolutely right that we have a problem with redtape and nimbyism in this country.

So all the countries with bigger and more prosperous economies than ours, you can reach half the industrial centres within an hour and a half of their biggest international airport? India, China, Brazil

As has already been touched on, big business will stay in the South East and executives will reside in Cheshire and commute to London. Only a very few will be really advantaged by a time save saving benefit (if there really is one)

In thirty years time video technology will have moved on and we'll be talking to holograms

Instead if building these new railways, can't we just upgrade the current west/east coast main lines so they can take trains of 225mph? Wouldnt that make sense and be cheaper?

Yes it would, thats why we are not going to do it.

I think it's essential for modernising the infrastructure of our Victorian rail network. Our country's compact size will only be a selling point for business if we are able to exploit it accordingly. You can now go from Guangzhou to Beijing in 8hours, so our current travel time from Manchester to London is a bit of a joke.

My only problem with it is the 2032 completion date! I know it's an awful lot of work but it still seems ridiculous that it can't be done in under a decade. I really don't understand the outcry from most of the public whenever a sensible infrastructure project like this is suggested - particuarly on here where it will benefit Mancunians a lot more than others!

Wouldn't the £32billion be better spent sorting out the current railway infrastructure rather than a new fast line for people who want to get to London?

I can hardly hear myself think for 'big business' crying out for a hs link to London.

Which 'big business' is gonna benefit from this, and by how much? How will that benefit pass on to everybody.
Would this 'growth' be worth more than the projected cost (cos they're always accurate) of the link?

And who wouldn't want a massive fuckin train flying past their back fence if it meant 'big business' had an edge?

load of fuckin shite.

Some good points and some bad points about this.
Good points, rags will be able to get home quicker after games at the swamp
Bad Point, less hotel rooms being sold in Manchester

Good point, fewer rags in town after games at the swamp
bad point, it will take too long before operational.

It's frankly embarrassing considering the pioneers such as Brunel who built our infrastructures before.
Why are we calling it High Speed. By the time it has been completed it will be so far behind the times. We know full well that it will be late. we don't have the people to lead this venture.
Our whole country is a mess in respects to infrastructure. We have water shortages despite plenty of rainfall. We haven't built a proper modern reservoir or drainage system. Our power supplies are outdated and we are struggling to modernise there. We were far better at recycling and waste disposal in the 40s than we are now.
IT's sad that people who make these decisions are supposedly our educated citizens.

Manchester should have an underground. An international hub should be built in the middle of the UK ( as best we can) with Maglev links to all major cities. Scotland can build new cities. The wealth should be spread. With that the population would spread.
We are too London Centric when with our size compared to that of Brazil, India etc we could compete as a giant interconnected City.
