Holidays

Have you been to Samui before ? Any recommendations for decent hotels etc ?
Thinking of going later in the year
We went a few years ago and stayed in Bo Phut and loved it. Very cool place and felt comfortable walking about and eating from the local food stalls. The town centre was great with a laid back, hippy-ish feel and there were plenty of decent restaurants and bars. To be honest, it was more fun eating from the local places for a couple of quid than the restaurants! No bad bellies or anything like that.

We stayed in the Bo Phut Resort hotel, which was absolutely superb but we were on our honeymoon. I don't remember it being outrageously expensive but was a top class hotel. We met up with a a couple of mates who were going around the world and they booked a local place and it was great - clean, air con and near the beach. The price was very low and you couldn't fault it!

No worries - we also went to Cologne and Munich last year. Cologne was a 1-nighter - it was a nice trip to see the cathedral and stuff along the Rhine. Videos for both cities are clogged up in our video backlog!

Cadiz is on our list, we'll probably do it as a day-trip on a future return trip to Seville.

My daughters have got Dubrovnik booked for October.
We've pencilled in Seville on your recommendation for next year Rob if we can make a break!

For City breaks in Europe, I love Germany as there's so much to see and the people are amazing. I don't think there's much to see in Cologne apart from the cathedral. We did the Christmas markets and it was great but I think it just highlighted how much of the city was rebuilt after the War!

I think Poland is probably my favourite for city breaks though - Warsaw and Gdansk are superb places and I'd recommend anyone to do them!

Just booked a week in the Mayan Riviera. We would normally go to Cuba but a last minute change of heart.
I should be back there now but stuck in Spain for the foreseeable due to stupid people doing stupid things! :-(

I was only meant to be back here for about 3 weeks, that was about 7 weeks ago. Shame, I'd have bought you a beer. :-)

Good stuff, I absolutely guarantee you won’t be disappointed with Seville.

I agree about Cologne. We got a cheap flight and really wanted to see the cathedral- that and a few hours walking alongside the river so a one-night trip was enough.

We're going to Vietnam in a few weeks, stopping off in Hong Kong on the way for a few days. Not been to Vietnam yet but really looking forward to it.
Vietnams brill, been 3 times. Prefer it to Thailand as its more laid back , although having said that I enjoy there as well .
In fact brothers out in Vietnam/Thailand at the moment doing a five week trip and I hope to catch up with him in Bangkok at the start of Feb
Where abouts you going ?

Anyone done Tromso? Going in March for 5 days, flights cheap enough from Manchester but balanced out by high prices in Tromso.

A mate of mine went and liked it, said it was scenic but the weather wasnt great! He enjoyed it and said he would go back but the weather was a problem for him as it rained most of the time he was there. I don't remember him saying anything particular about it in terms of things to do but enjoyed it apart from the rain!

Also, bear in mind the prices in Norway - they are off the scale and way more than I expected. It's the most expensive country weve been to! We went to Oslo around 15 years ago and the price of a pint then was £13 and restaurants were eye watering. We ate out at Subway and pizza shops after the first meal and even then it was more than double what you would pay here. We've been to quite a few places across Scandinavia and one thing we tend to do is look for the immigrant areas as the food is normally cheaper and more what we like. I don't remember seeing any in Oslo from memory so might be even less of an option in Tromso.

No beers from the supermarket from memory on Sundays either so bear that in mind if you fancy a beer back in the hotel. Might be worth stocking up on Duty Free when you arrive as if you like a spirit it will absolutely batter your wallet.

Tromso is quite far north so beat in mind in March the weather will be changeable and if it's cold it will be very cold. Hopefully you get to see the Northern Lights if they are on around that time!

I'll be there March 26th for a week. Pop in if you're around. I'll be lying down somewhere.

Cheers mate. Yes we can see the prices are
very high but it's a chance to see the northern lights and be amongst heavy snow which is great.
We'll use too good to go to supplement food and plan to either get wine from duty free or a supermarket. Either way it's something totally different and a chance to see a remote part of the world.

That's by Playa Del Carmen isn't it? My place is about 45 mins further along the coast. Dont venture onto 5th Avenue too much I've a feeling your patience will run out pretty quick!
