Homophobia in football

If I was a United fan I'd feel more let down by the club than the player tbh. Whether you agree or not, the club clearly thought the jackets were a worthwhile show of support. For them to withdraw that support to spare the embarrassment of someone else's bigoted views coming to light is extremely weak. They also should have anticipated these kinds of issues and planned around it.

Its also not reported that he is happy enough to wear the rags badge which features an image of the devil which is forbidden in Islam I believe its considered to be the sin of Shirk.

Being asked to wear a rainbow armband as a gesture to reassure gay fans (including those of his own club) that they are welcome and ought to feel safe watching the club shouldn't be a big deal. So many promising young footballers give up football in their early teens once they realise they might be gay due to attitudes in their dressing rooms and in the terraces. The game shouldn't be losing those players and it can only be a good thing for the sport to encourage an environment where EVERYONE can thrive and reach their potential. It's not telling people to go and be gay.
This is so important. I’m in the US, but I know many talented gay athletes who gave up sports at a youngish age because the locker room culture was so toxic for them. It’s incredibly sad.

Also, although these campaigns may seem performative, there is evidence they make a difference. Both on a larger scale and for individuals.

Also, i think UK opinions (I figuring this forums mostly UK men over 30?) are far more tolerant on this matter than then in the US. Im impressed. I wouldn’t have even waded into this topic in a US sports forum.

What happened to the phrase "lets agree to disagree"?

There are over 8 billion people on this planet, not everyone is going to have the same outlook on life.

Two individuals can be respectful and cordial with each other without sharing the same beliefs.

Footballers are paid to kick the ball into the net.

You know what? Fine.

You all win.

You're right.

Believing that highly-visible football clubs with a wide variety of players of all races and creeds and colors and cultures could/should be leaders in promoting tolerance and understanding among different people is a mistake.

They can and should be divorced from such things.

They shouldn't ask players to wear rainbow armbands.

League-wide or even player-sponsored kneeling as a sign that racism shouldn't be tolerated should stop.

Clubs should do their level best to avoid being perceived as being involved in "political issues."

And fans who persist with monkey chants should be allowed to continue to voice them.

After all, how woke to discourage freedom of expression.

The performative left should be ashamed.

I repeat, the world is not a pale imitation of the Californian liberal left.

The list you've just typed out is, for you, self evidently the right way to go, the liberal world view of universal human rights, of progress and freedom of expression, where the rights of minorities are respected, where bigotry, misogyny and racism are gone, a better world free of fear and war and famine and exploitation, the enlightened view! This is mum and apple pie stuff! What rational, free thinking person could disagree? What could possibly trump these incontestable aspirations.

I'll tell you what trumps them.

The right to say no, the right to say I do not agree.

Well what the fuck are we doing paying the likes of Ederson and Oretga then?

I'm not against causes like this really (they've become so regular that they've started to fade into the background), but if someone chooses to opt out for whatever reason, that's their choice and should be respected. Whether it makes them a bigot, only really matters on their actions and what they say. A belief, even if it's prejudiced, is no real problem if it's inside someone's head. There are a lot of folks out there who think romantic or sexual relationships should only be between members of the opposite sex, and that there are only 2 genders. If those folks aren't doing anybody any harm, there's no problem.

I think pulling him up on wearing a shirt that advertises a betting company is a bit like that meme of the two medieval peasants, 'we should improve society' 'ah, but you live in society!'. What the club has on its shirt is something out of his control, he can't just walk out and tear up his contract, over a club sponsor. It's also like saying you can't talk about pollution or climate change if you drive a car, or use a plane.

I am quite appalled a Guehi TBH

You can think its all performative and want to stick to football (have a lot of time that POV) but to actively scrawl I LOVE JESUS on the armband is explicitly making a point you have a problem with homosexuality. It’s not acceptable at all.
