Homophobia in football

I repeat, the world is not a pale imitation of the Californian liberal left.

The list you've just typed out is, for you, self evidently the right way to go, the liberal world view of universal human rights, of progress and freedom of expression, where the rights of minorities are respected, where bigotry, misogyny and racism are gone, a better world free of fear and war and famine and exploitation, the enlightened view! This is mum and apple pie stuff! What rational, free thinking person could disagree? What could possibly trump these incontestable aspirations.

I'll tell you what trumps them.

The right to say no, the right to say I do not agree.
You know what trumps that right?

The right to not care whether you agree with me or not, nor care about what you think about me or my worldview, nor what you assume about them.

Lots of people who don't have a problem with Homosexuality per se, may still have a problem promoting it
I don't believe that at all. Do you think any footballer on the planet would have a problem wearing a captain's armband promoting Cancer Research or anti-bullying? The only reason people object to this one it because they object to the cause, not because they object to the idea of football being used to promote causes. And if you disagree, find me one example of a player who refuses to take part in any and all campaigns.

Instead of these empty gestures I think we should be questioning why , as we approach the year 2025, there are still next to no openly gay footballers. We should be questioning why they are afraid to be open about their sexuality. That is the scandal here and not someone refusing to wear an armband

How many footballers need to come out of the closet before we stop this “no openly gay footballers” there’s been quite a few.

Respecting those who gave their life’s for your freedoms should be respected by all, No?

Anyway that’s for another thread ….

I believe it should but others may feel it’s representative of something entirely different & that’s ok to have different opinions.

What happened to the phrase "lets agree to disagree"?

There are over 8 billion people on this planet, not everyone is going to have the same outlook on life.

Two individuals can be respectful and cordial with each other without sharing the same beliefs.

Footballers are paid to kick the ball into the net.
Opinions and debate are no longer allowed on anything, very sad and not healthy.

Sport all sport should stop getting involved in matters away from sport, concentrate on what you do well and leave the rest alone.

Personally I don't care about anyone's sexuality but I don't want to be told how I should feel about it.

Has there?

Not many in the UK

Justin Fashanau is probably the highest profile

No one is promoting it. That certain people (who think their “beliefs” equate to “rights”) think it is being promoted speaks to their phobia.

So he has to be high profile? I think that’s the major issue, unless it’s a ballon D’or contender then it’s blamed on fear of coming out.

If you are writing something about Jesus on a rainbow armband, it's pretty obvious to me that is homophobic. Yet again someone using their beliefs as an excuse to hide behind their homophobia. He's basically saying LGBT people need to stop and Jesus is a way to do that. Religion doesn't half fuck people's heads up.

I am quite appalled a Guehi TBH

You can think its all performative and want to stick to football (have a lot of time that POV) but to actively scrawl I LOVE JESUS on the armband is explicitly making a point you have a problem with homosexuality. It’s not acceptable at all.
I'm glad someone else is actually seeing this for what it is. The FA are scared to do anything about it.

Maybe he is a homosexual and is a fan of Gabriel Jesus..... Or Jesus Navas?

So who are these openly gay footballers? If they are so numerous you’ll be able to name a few

Maybe he was just making the point that political AND religious items should not be worn, and of course, it was just the religious one that was an issue. I actually rather object to the assumption that Christianity / a relationship with jesus and homosexuality are mutually exclusive. The subtext seems to be that gays can't be Christians or being gay is a sin, which is of course a bit homophobic.

There was the Blackpool lad who came out & noone was really bothered & at the same time there was the lad from Adelaide United player in Oz.

Do I think there’s gay players that are keeping it secret…… of course but the reason could be many things, if there’s flamboyant entertainers who hide it then possibly people prefer to keep it quiet.

Personally I don’t think there are that many gay players & not sure why people are obsessed about it but maybe you know & can name them.

There is nothing political about football recognising there is rampant homophobia in its realm and trying to show support for those on the end of it.

Same racism.

That is NOT the same as someone wanting to promote religious beliefs - and that its what they are at best..beliefs.

Maybe time for some positive action then. Quota of say x3 openly gay (photos with male partner(s) etc) registered with each pl squad and exempt their transfer fees wages from ffp calculations? This would be a lot more effective that compelled items of clothing.

This made me smile.

I believe you when you say you don't care what I think of your worldview, if that's the case, then stop selling it.

I'm not the one advocating changing hearts and minds from the field to the terraces, that would be you. I'm not in the business of shaping the world in my image, that would be you too.

Now I find indifference is in vogue! It's not au revoir, it's goodbye.

What you fail to grasp is your indifference was all I was asking for.

So no high profile player anywhere near the top divisions has come out as gay. I find that pretty sad

Yes I can name a well known ex Old Firm
Player but I’m not going to as not my place

Why is it sad?

Do you think there’s a talent not being given a chance because he’s gay or do you think they are hiding it?

The fact that there’s very few openly gay ex players although admittedly more makes me think it’s not that big an issue.

I do support the rainbow laces rounds & think it helps with conversations.
