Hooliganism and Violence Maine Road 80's/early 90's

I've lost track of what game different people are talking about. But if it's the 5-0 game ( Beardlsey hat-trick ) that people are claiming 5K, they're well off, as you say.

Two half full small pens right behind the net. I don't like putting numbers on these things. Especially when they're from 40 years ago. But if I had to, I'd guess one thousand, tops.
Yeah. And when we played a year or two later, (Graeme Baker got head injury is all I can remember) we again had 2 not even full pens

Your phone still playing up mate ? :-)
I recall my mate going to watch United in a night match at Millwalls old den .... when I asked him the following morning how the match went, he told he wasn't sure because aggressive Millwall yobs were chasing him and rest of the united fans around the terraces and attacking them all night long !

Yep, I was at Newcastle that day, an you're about right with what you're saying about the 5-0 game, we definitely didn't have 5,000 there that day ........... aside from the estimated 20k city fans at the 1968 title win at Newcastle, I'd say the biggest following we've had there was when it all kicked off in our section at the FA Cup tie there, back in January, 1977 ..... 108 fans got thrown out of the ground that day, and 10 arrested, it was really bad fighting for about 10-15 minutes, but the Geordies were a really bad lot back then.
Not sure about that mate. I'd say we've taken more than that, pretty much every time in the Premier League era and plenty more in recent cup games.

From memory in '77 it was just the corner pen. Maybe 3/4 full until the guests arrived and two smallish blocks of seats next to it.

Chelsea home 88-89 season was lively outside the ground in the pissing rain. My old neighbour nearly got twatted as a group of proper Chelsea nutcases asked him how far the ground was from where they'd parked. His reply was you've driven 200 miles a five minute walk won't hurt you. We walked ahead as these Chelsea fans were calling him all sorts of names. He joined up with us leaving them fuming

My old man chatting about Leeds away in 78, people robbing burger stands etc. Anyone there?
I was definitely there, I did all the away games back then,.and Leeds was a bad place to go ...... we were getting escorted from the station to the ground and my mate fancied running across the road to a burger van, against my advice..... he didn't even get the chance to blurt out 'with ketchup an onions please' before he was battered over the head from behind by a Leeds fan wielding a plank of wood!

That was the end of his trip to Elland Road, he never even got to see the game, only the inside of the hospital!

Pretty sure it was nowhere near 5k, probably a lot less than half of that figure and despite them trouncing us 5-0 they tried to break down the gates / doors into our pens after the game. And as other posters have said the FA Cup game in 2002 we had a huge following and roamed around the place taking the piss for most of the day.
Ok, cheers - I’ll have to have a word with my mate ;)

We played them away in the cup two years running. Lost in ‘77, won in ‘78 when they kept invading the pitch and McQueen punched Harvey.

Fair to say that over the two days, that was just about as lively as it got at football, in my own personal experiences.

Definitely not 5000 but from what I remember 2 full pens then they opened another that I was in probably 3 quarter full the one that probably about 25 Newcastle "invaded"and at least 5 of them immediately got sparked out
At a wild guess 1500 city there that day ,the football special was the only one I had to stand up there and back so possibly 600 on it

The bloke who ran the specials, Howard something, used to always say that he could predict our away following almost exactly by seeing how many were on the special and multiplying it by 10.

Yet strangely the attendance was 10,000 higher than their previous game, and still lower than the official capacity

Newcastle brought 10,000+ to Maine Road in 83-84 and about 1,300 in 85-86 (as did Sheffield Wednesday)

The last time I attended a game at Old Trafford when City weren't playing was v Everton in 88-89
(26,000 and that's before the Everton fans were calculated)

That's the way it worked in the 80s, but evidently many now-irrelevant 60+ football supporters aren't capable of checking their facts.
Remember Wednesday, Chelsea and Newcastle bringing huge numbers. Can only remember United/Sunderland bringing similar

Went to them both. Remember me and my mate hiding behind this fat bloke on the way out as the missiles reigned down.

Howard Yates ? he's father bob used to do coach and train tickets from the travel club house near to the souvenir shop I think Howard retired to Spain Ian cheeseman worked with him on the specials

Oh yeah they both brought circa 12,000 for those promotion battles, but considerably less once we were all in the top flight

City had similar spectacular variations, taking 12,000+ for Trevor Francis's debut at Stoke and the high tidemark for the John Bond era
That was Stoke's highest attendance of 81-82 which I missed due to playing cricket

However I was there the following season (Stoke's 13th highest attendance) when we probably took less than 3,000.

Yeah mate, Yates seems to ring a bell. Think he lived Didsbury way at the time. Nice bloke. Gave me a lift home a couple of times, after long distance midweek games, when all the buses had finished by the time we got back.

Still see most of the guys who worked on the special from time to time. Pete, Ian, Dennis, Steve, Graham. Probably forgot one or two.
