Hooliganism and Violence Maine Road 80's/early 90's

Newcastle have NEVER infiltrated the City part of the Kippax. We ‘weren’t so keen to come back’? Is that why TWO huge firms of City took the piss in Newcastle before and after the FA Cup game in Feb 2002? Haymarket & Central/Pink Lane areas.
and at Wembley 1976.....no trouble. Geordies wanted to be bessie mates.

The ones dressed as magpies really shit me up though.

The coach i was on had some mental fuckers on it, and after being on the lash all day in a little village just before the A1 turn off everyone was up for it.
Parked on the hill then walked down the road that had a line of cops with dogs 'protecting' their massive boozer on the other side...

City had about 3000 at SJP that day,I expected to fill the full end but never happened,I allso got arrested my 1st offence and was fined £220 as a 17 year old city fan it was a experience being locked up with a load of drunk geordies, did I learn dud I heck

Reading the few comments, Newcastle infiltrated the City end.

Man City at Newcastle in 1983

It was the NME infiltrating the Man City end just like we did in their end at Maine Road in the same season.

Shocking numbers from City for a big Div 2 game. On their forum they said Newcastle were in their end and they only had 250 to 300. Also they had a hard time in the FA Cup up here in the 70's so never keen to come back. That's why they always put our bus windows out at Main Road and always dodgy there if you were caught in an alley.

They were already in the City end. I was in the old West Stand Paddock (couldn’t get on the Gallowgate that day it was heaving!) and clocked them sat on the wall at the back.

This was a good few years before I started doing away games so I'm not best qualified to comment. A mate of mine, however, went to that game at SJP in 1983. He was only 15 at the time and obviously the passage of time can play a few tricks with the memory but at no point did he ever say Newcastle infiltrated the City end that day. In fact, he said we took a large following - possibly 5000 or so - and the escort from Manors station was huge. Even from the pic, it doesn't look like they're exactly infiltrating the away end. I'm guessing it's Newcastle in the foreground and City in the corner and those in the foreground just look like they're goading the City fans on the other side of the fence separating both sets of fans.

Edit: Just watched the footage of the goals and it is City in the foreground. Funny as I always thought the away team got the corner bit in those days

These tales often tend to get rolled into a mix match of incidents from different games, told as if they all happened on the same day.

The infiltrating the City end bit probably comes from the FA Cup game in '77.

Pretty sure it was nowhere near 5k, probably a lot less than half of that figure and despite them trouncing us 5-0 they tried to break down the gates / doors into our pens after the game. And as other posters have said the FA Cup game in 2002 we had a huge following and roamed around the place taking the piss for most of the day.

I've lost track of what game different people are talking about. But if it's the 5-0 game ( Beardlsey hat-trick ) that people are claiming 5K, they're well off, as you say.

Two half full small pens right behind the net. I don't like putting numbers on these things. Especially when they're from 40 years ago. But if I had to, I'd guess one thousand, tops.

Memory is going somewhat but for the 5-0 game I would have thought 1 - 1.5k as a maximum.

I think you are right
I have just been watching City v Spurs from Feb 83, a 2/2 draw on you tube and Dennis Tueart was playing.

Another interesting point they mentioned that I didn't remember was Bond had been followed by private detectives probably arranged by the club (Swales).
There were also quite a few Swales out banners even then.
That's an interesting statement about Bond and being followed ,I live in Deepest North Devon and when Bond was manager City played a local Western league club called Bideford in a pre season friendly ,I live 9 miles away in Barnstaple and on the Saturday evening we was out on the town walked into a local pub only to see the entire City Squad in there on the lash ,good bunch ,very friendly and a good laugh ,we had a few ales with them and I can remember chatting to Tommy Caton plus others ,we ended up in a night club with them and I think they "enjoyed" the local girls too ,there's more to this story as well but I better keep stum ;-)

Yep, I was at Newcastle that day, an you're about right with what you're saying about the 5-0 game, we definitely didn't have 5,000 there that day ........... aside from the estimated 20k city fans at the 1968 title win at Newcastle, I'd say the biggest following we've had there was when it all kicked off in our section at the FA Cup tie there, back in January, 1977 ..... 108 fans got thrown out of the ground that day, and 10 arrested, it was really bad fighting for about 10-15 minutes, but the Geordies were a really bad lot back then.
