Hooliganism and Violence Maine Road 80's/early 90's

Always trouble when Newcastle came. Fights before the game.and at the back of the Kippax concourse with the blue dividing fence. Trouble at st James when they won 5-0 I think it was. Loads o blues travelling to that one.massive city escort with Newcastle on both sides. That was fun and games
I was there in 1977 and the Geordies ended up amongst the City fans on the terraces.
And it was a bit leery walking back to the city centre coach/bus station with a police escort, and the Geordies itching to have a go at us.

Mid 80’s IIRC, maybe ‘85. Behind our end was what can now be described as the CL fan park. It was just waste land with stones, bricks etc galore. Utter carnage after the game. We always took a huge following there.
Yep that’s the one it was carnage alright

If we're talking about the same game it was a midweek goalless draw (84-85) and the crowd was 18,004.

Typical for the period, their previous home attendance had been 9,071, and their next home attendance was 10,236

After the Final Whistle, the home fans invaded the pitch and ran straight towards us.
Shouldn't laugh, but I recall the BBC News covering the event the following morning, and bottles flying from the City end

Yes that’s the one mate, then we went outside and it was carnage wasteland with bottles bricks free for all. The good old days lol

I’ve got a vague recollection of them doing a “Sack the board” type protest and for at least a short time there been a mini West Ham style mutual appreciation, where City joined in signing it. I think taking the piss to start with but then for real.

Might well be imagining the whole thing though.

There was definitely one evening game down there where rumours were going round that a City fan had been stabbed in the Bullring ( that’s the shopping centre not a euphemism) early in the day and tensions were running a little high for the rest of the day/ night.

The 5-0 Newcastle game was in 1983. Despite having battered us on the pitch they decided that they wanted to come into our section and batter us! Didn't have many there that day maybe 1,200, memory is a bit sketchy.

I definitely remember the "Sack the Board" game.

2-0 win at St Andrews in 88-89. They were doomed to relegation to the third tier, and there was a protest mid-match where some of the home fans attempted to storm the Directors Box.
Once McNab had extended our lead with a floating curving shot (accelerated by a strong wind) the City contingent were happy to support the Brummies.

Even now, I think many older City fans can identify with Birmingham's self inflicted farce and capacity for implosion.

I was at that game. The banana craze was in full flow. There was a really sparse crowd that day and there was a some "Sack The Board" chanting.

The Guvnors travelled to that one in the days when a lot of the main players had been taken out by Operation Omega. They walked to the ground unopposed before the game and some went in the home end. After the game is was a different story when the Zulus stormed into City near the bullring.

How good was Waddle, Keegan and Beardsley back then ? I bet they took most teams apart.
