As you say there weren't many from memory, and the ones from the 70s are probably easier to recall, because unlike the 80s I wasn't pissed.Forgotten all about that game but now you’ve jogged my memory it comes back. Everyone was in uproar over the sending off. Even though it was 100% the right decision.
Makes you think how rare sendings off were before the 80s or even 90s. Apart from that one I remember Dennis Tueart for also butting a Hartlepool player. Struggling to think of a single other one off the top of my head. Although I’m sure there was one or two more.
Same with England. When David Beckham got sent off for tapping Simone on the leg, he was only the fifth England player to ever be sent off. There wasn’t a single one for the first 96 years.
Doyle v United 73-74 and Kidd v Derby 76-77 immediately spring to mind.
We also seemed to have a spate in 75-76: Tueart,(Hartlepool) Doyle (Derby) and, Donachie (Stoke FAC)
