Hooliganism and Violence Maine Road 80's/early 90's

Forgotten all about that game but now you’ve jogged my memory it comes back. Everyone was in uproar over the sending off. Even though it was 100% the right decision.

Makes you think how rare sendings off were before the 80s or even 90s. Apart from that one I remember Dennis Tueart for also butting a Hartlepool player. Struggling to think of a single other one off the top of my head. Although I’m sure there was one or two more.

Same with England. When David Beckham got sent off for tapping Simone on the leg, he was only the fifth England player to ever be sent off. There wasn’t a single one for the first 96 years.
As you say there weren't many from memory, and the ones from the 70s are probably easier to recall, because unlike the 80s I wasn't pissed.

Doyle v United 73-74 and Kidd v Derby 76-77 immediately spring to mind.
We also seemed to have a spate in 75-76: Tueart,(Hartlepool) Doyle (Derby) and, Donachie (Stoke FAC)

Even Trevor Francis (RIP) was sent off for a head butt.

Mental night.
A good few of us had running battles in the park after the game.
Rumored a bad slashing to a City lad during that night made it even more toxic
Didn't quite a few get slashed that night? A lad I knew got his cheek slashed before the game, saw him at the bus stop in town when we got back.

Rumours at the ground of a blue who needed 20 odd stitches, but how the fuck that medical report got to us so quickly back in those days I'll never know.
It takes 4 weeks to get an appointment these days ha

Mike Doyle got sent off in the first ever City game I went to, I was only 7, and was apparently swearing like a trooper after it happened. It was the 4-3 win against Derby who were then champions, Franny was playing for them.
Great game as I recall, Dennis going virtually the full length of the pitch for the fourth goal. Strange to see Franny against us (again!) and also earlier in the same season Buzzer playing for Burnley against us too.

I definitely remember the "Sack the Board" game.

2-0 win at St Andrews in 88-89. They were doomed to relegation to the third tier, and there was a protest mid-match where some of the home fans attempted to storm the Directors Box.
Once McNab had extended our lead with a floating curving shot (accelerated by a strong wind) the City contingent were happy to support the Brummies.

Even now, I think many older City fans can identify with Birmingham's self inflicted farce and capacity for implosion.
Neil Lennon’s debut / one and only game.
(I have no recollection whatsoever of what I had for tea last night).

2000 the toilets were smashed up and Barnsley Chairman front page of local paper calling City fans animals. Im 45 and had started the doors in 1998 on Roses bar so got to know the lads from the firm at the time, still drink with alot of them at away days , they've grown up now haha, the millennium lads were a game bunch as we rise back through the leagues.
Where were you after we best Swindon 6-0????? United had played away at Leeds and walked past Roses; clocked a few of us in there, then what seemed like fucking hundreds of them marched in, handed out a few sly digs until OB turned up.

Funnily enough I was at the Stockport v Blackburn friendly on Friday with a Blackburn supporting mate.

We were taking about the day of the Hillsborough disaster, and I mentioned that I was sat behind Neil Lennon Paul Lake and Mark Seagraves at Ewood Park.
The response was.a disbelieving "Did Neil Lennon play for City?"

PS
You're right about Birmingham, but I think Lennon's one appearance was at the end of the previous season (3-0 win 87-88)
I wouldn't wager any money on it though. As you say, it seems a long time ago, and I might have dreamt the whole experience
