Hooliganism and Violence Maine Road 80's/early 90's

I consider all this rufty tufty talk from the "old days" pathetic and a sign of a sad life!

In some cases you may be right. But for many they are simply reflecting how life was like back then in and around football. There was a lot of anger and football proved a useful outlet.

A particularly nasty day was an FA cup fifth round tie against Plymouth in the mid eighties. Their was a massive gay rights demonstration in town in protest against the Thatcher government. I saw no worse before the match than blues jeering the demonstraters but at the match rumors spread that the parade had been attacked and several demonstrates had been ambushed and injured. We won the match 3 1;and learned the Rags had lost at Arsenal ending there last chance of a trophy that season so headed back to town in a great mood. When I reached Wilmslow Rd I was horrified to see anyone who looked like they had been on the demo smacked by gangs of blues as many were walking back that way towards the uni. The worse incident I witnessed was a lesbian couple being thrown out into the traffic fortunately their was no accident. Only time in my life I felt ashamed to be a blue. This will seem totally unbelievable in these days of Canal St and gay pride but it happened and left me feeling disgusted.
Sounds about right that mate, there was a snippet in the Guvnors book about the march that got hijacked.

But then... I am a proud pacifist and find all forms of wanton violence nauseating.

Not necessarily old days for those on Wembley Way in 2011, at Villa Park for the Charity Shield v Chelsea or at the League Cup final v Villa only last year.
All of those innocents caught up in nonsense not of their own causing would have been glad to see a few old school blues turn up willing to jump in and give more than they would take

Yep . i remember that Barnsley game in 1996 .... they had loads of coaches parked alongside Platt Fields Park, on Platt Lane , and they were having a go at City fans walking back that way after the game , and those queueing in traffic in cars.

They also tried on with a couple of mates of mine and their dad, as they walked through an alleyway behind the Kippax ... knocking the dads City hat off his head and trying to goad them into retaliating.

And that night League Cup game back in 1981 their place wasn't much better either ... when Aylott scored with a great header to knock us out, and we took 9,000 fans to Oakwell ..... a 34,000 crowd, attended the game , and there was trouble on the way back to the station, and on the platforms!.

Oh yes I remember this one

That was the bottom line back then wasn't it, many younger fans seem to not realise that.
