House Of The Dragon (GOT Prequel)

Lol, cheers, I think. To begin with I found that more difficult to watch than any episode of the show, regardless of season.

Having watched it again though, I can see how many flaws people saw in it, and I’m reminded myself of all the strands that were left hanging.
The biggest overarching gripe seemingly why such a short truncated final series. Did the makers ever justify that? Was it for financial reasons, or did the writers just not have a clear or strong enough vision for how it could all satisfyingly conclude?

And even as a casual viewer I do recall the volte-face in Emilia Clarke’s character a tad hard to swallow.

Cheers for the reply anyway - I think I may come back to that clip again at some point ;-)
It’s a good question about why people didn’t like it and I’m sure the theme for most people will be the same.

For me you have to go back to the first three series and that’s where it lies. The books which I started with years and years before the series came out was all about plot and character development and spent many books just developing character arcs and relationships between them. Nothing was rushed and I remember reading the books desperate for the next chapter on Arya or Tyrion to come around. The show was very much the same early on and the different story arcs was outstanding. It wasn’t about battles and in the first few series there were no battle scenes, it was just the lead up and aftermath. Also behind all that was that everybody dies. There were no happy endings or romantic last minute reprieves, people just died as would really happen.

Roll on to the later series and that just flipped on its head. Everything felt rushed, nothing was in line with what made it so brilliant. For me the whole last series pretty much was forced and just became about big battles, CGI and forcing the show to a conclusion and the ending was just stupid. My actual favourite episode in the last series was when not a lot happened and the characters just spent time talking and reminiscing on the past.

All in all it’s a great series which without the last series would be top of any list of TV programmes for me. The last series just left a very sour taste and felt very short changed.

Having watched all those reviews @TCIB it’s completely given me a new perspective and certainly explains why some fans were gutted by how it panned out. I might go back and see if I can read up on how the writers responded to all these often valid criticisms.

Unrelentingly negative the Critical Drinker isn’t he? Did he produce more balances / positive reviews for every episode of seasons 1-7? Having watched those, I find it hard to imagine him being positive! Apart from his jarring use of spaz/spastic, he makes some telling points & devastating take-downs. I’d been so wrapped up in the story outcomes when I watched it, I hadn’t really considered many of them.
He must have found some redeeming features - or maybe not.

Thanks for your replies too @willipp pal. I can certainly see the faults more clearly now, for better or worse, and appreciate what you say about the source books, which I’ve never read, so I guess that’s a big issue on my part.

I suppose it was a victim of its own success in raising the bar of expectation so so high, that to conclude in any satisfying way was going to be a really difficult challenge.

It’s better to travel hopefully than arrive, so maybe I’m just going to enjoy the journey on this new series ;-)

It was a good first episode. Did feel very fast paced but there were some good performances throughout. Assume this won't be an eight season show like GoT so assume the pace will have to be faster.

Sky UHD HDR picture quality is fucking abysmal. Black scenes are literally fucking purple!

I hope the ending is better than GoT. All that we went through for 10 years for it to end like it did was fucking pathetic. Every one sat round a table at the end as if fuck all had happened. terrible .

As it's a prequel with most of the future story set ups are history in rhe series and Martin directly involved with the scripts, hopefully it won't run off course like GoT did

Thought the dialogue was hard to hear, turned the tv up and next it’s booming out when the gold army turned. The remote was like a hot potato but still enjoyed the first episode.
