The withdrawal period counts too.

Once we we had fully left the EU were able to get to the Final.

For the whole period we were in the EEC/EU we never won a tournament,but we did before entering, now we have a chance again.

It helps that they had favourable treatment from referees, England paid all the fees without getting the benefits.

Have you noticed our fortunes at Eurovision improved this year as well?

Brexit downside: Wales also managed to get the WC finals again. They'd never qualified for the WC whilst the UK were members of the EEC/EU.
