How do we resolve the Brexit mess?

As I've said before, I don't want to see the UK back in the EU unless they vote for it with a super-majority (67%+) which should at least ensure we won't be going through this bollocks again, distracting all of the administration from other extremely important issues, for at least a generation. Also, while nobody in the EU gives a fuck about the pound and ye can keep that (see Poland, Czechia and Sweden) the other special exemptions would have to go.
EU would be strong without the U.K. but even stronger with them. You can’t deny gravity for ever and I think global considerations will resolve this within ten years.
Maybe Scotland will be quicker. I certainly hope so.

Depends whether the UK are going to be a positive force within the union or continue to be negative and disruptive. Far too much time and energy wasted between 1992 and 2020 dealing with the UK having childish temper tantrums when there were other, far more important things that needed attention.
An independent Scotland are far more than welcome and imo would be fast-tracked.

What it comes down to is the UK, and specially England, need to grow up and get over the rule britannia bollocks. The UK in the 21s century needs to completely re-evaluate what it is, and what it wants to be, instead of constantly looking back over its shoulder going "aren't we brilliant, look what we did". It's partly why I'd like to get shut of the monarchy, to have a break from the past and start moving forward, but know there's fuck all chance of that happening. Stop acting like twats essentially.

I've no issue with the monarchy personally, think an unelected House of Lords/upper house is a far bigger issue although an elected head of state would be a positive for ye.

First few lines are spot on.

What gets me about the current long term financial shit show of a disaster we find ourselves in is, according to every government minister, the problem caused by the war in the Ukraine and Covid.

Never ever mentioning the major cause which is brexit.

The country is run by self serving cunts.

If it couldn’t get a trade deal with its greatest ally, the chances of it getting superior deals with India, China et al. are not promising. The geopolitical landscape has shifted since 2016 and it’s not coming back, which makes the UK’s continued refusal to accept the new reality and reframe its relationship with the EU all the more remarkable. The recalcitrance is being largely driven now to save the faces of politicians, but every day it delays it only makes the country poorer.

The only remote chance we have of re-joining is if we can do the following

1/ask - do diplomacy and negotiate like grown ups
2/ banish all talk of us being out - that will probably take a generation or 2 - 3 Parliaments to rid ourselves of Farage/Tice and opportunists like Johnson
3/ politicians to campaign naming and shaming the adverse effects on our economy illustrating why we are behind the rest of the G7 on growth
3a/ Possibly dropping out of the G7 or coming close
4/ People going on holiday to Spain etc and seeing places that look better and are in a better state than here because they are a member state

We are probably going to have to accept the loss of some manufacturing prowess - possibly car plants etc - and an increase in unemployment and we have to present a cogent case to 27 member countries that we want to re-join and won't fuck them about again - the latter will be the hardest coz the likes of people like Farage will start to say that our lack or performance on an international stage is nothing to do with us but the EU punishing us for leaving - ie they are unhappy with us doing a trade deal with the Azores so are making it tough for us. I doubt we will re-join in my lifetime.

Yes it is. And we will always be in this mess whilst that is the case.

Brexit may or may not be a sack of shit.
The main problem is the cnuts we have delivering it.
Would Labour do it any better im not sure.

We will never rejoin the EU as we’d never pay the price likely to be extracted to get 27 yeses. Greece and the Elgin Marbles along with Spain and Gibraltar would see to that without all the other scores that might need to be settled. Best we can hope for is single market and customs union and, given where we are now, I’d take that in a heartbeat.

It depends how much worse off we become against the EU. Would Joe Public give a shit about some stolen marbles over greater prosperity? I can see some kick back over Gib but again if the Euro is almost at parity with the pound would we take much persuading?

The absolute weirdest thing about the UK and indeed the USA is the idea that somehow recession and labour shortages can be fixed by cajoling/forcing people who have benefitted from previous prosperity back to work. What they don't seem to get is that those who benefitted of past prosperity want fuck all to do with future Brexit shite - they want what their forebears enjoyed a few years ago shops, services and care and despite what the may have voted for in 2016 it wasn't to come out of retirement to make butties for and wipe the arses of other people

Increasingly hearing business people on Radio 4 calling for a time-limited visas for migrants to do non high-skilled jobs. However, there’s a labour shortage across Europe (demonstration in Madrid yesterday over health care shortages) so they’d have to come from much further afield. How would that square with those who complained against immigration (and this would not be ‘white’ immigration’) and what effect would that have on suppressing wages as inflation soars?
