Hard to say who was best ever but - at international level - both Maradona and Pele eclipsed Messi. Both were victims of thuggish de&ending too.

For me, he shades it from Messi, I just think Maradona’s best, was slightly better than Messi’s best, and Maradona, even though they do similar things, looked more graceful when doing them.
Both a joy to watch on form though.

Dragged that Argentina side kicking and screaming to a World Cup on his own. Then did it again with Napoli, the defenders would kick the shit out of him in seria a. Messi is quality but he also had the likes of Xavi and Iniesta working things behind him, the level of play reached by Barca between 2008 to 2011 was some achievement.
