How good were The Who

My mates and I saw them in Sheffield (the Manchester date was sold out) way back in October 1967. They were immense. Among the supporting acts were Traffic and the Herd with Peter Frampton so a great show all round.

My favourites back in the day: mid-60s to early 1970s. Saw them half a dozen times in that period. Always brilliant live.

Pete Townshend: flailing arms and crashing chords. Roger Daltrey: swirling mic. John Entwistle: The Ox. Looked deliberately bored amongst the chaos. Keith Moon: “Patent British Exploding Drummer” and a fkn nutter. My mate got a minor cut on his forehead from a flying cymbal when Moon smashed up a drum kit. Walked round proudly showing it off until it healed.

If you need to ask why they behaved liked that, you didn’t get them.

P.S. Wouldn’t defend Townsend‘s later episode though.

Townshend never downloaded child porn.
He used a credit card to access a site that had it. Then canceled the transaction.

Strange behaviour. I knew well before he was arrested that he was publicly drawing a link between the Russian mafia and child pornographers and campaigning against it.

In his book he says he wanted to know for sure that these sites were profiting from child pornography.
People seem to be giving him the benefit of the doubt.

I certainly recognise their place in music history, we'll never see their like again, but I wasn't a huge fan of their music.

Having said that, and surely posted before, their set at the Isle of Wight Festival really was quite something, but then so was the festival. Higher attendance than Woodstock.

Only band to be featured twice in the Classic Albums tv series. First for Who’s Next and then for The Who Sell Out.
Not sure the latter deserves to be called ‘classic’ though.

Great band, who also had the sense to stop (temporarily) when the 1980s kicked in.

Still great live.

Culturally influential. Managed to capture the essence of British urban life and youth culture.

And, unlike Liz Truss, knew what it meant to DELIVER
