Another thing that was very notable at Dortmund was that he would often score two or three in a game and none in others. When he has a team by the short and curlies, he'll go to town on them, but when he's marshalled well, he won't get a sniff. He’s been like that a lot in his short career so far. Seems to hit the ground running, scoring for fun at the start of each season or at a new club, then it calms down to a more normal but still very good rate to end the season.
(All League and CL goals only)
In 2019-20 he scored 19 goals in the opening 13 games for Salzburg to start the season, then 5 goals in 8 games with 5 of those games being goalless for him.
He then moved to Dortmund in the January and scored 11 goals in his first 8 games for them, then 5 goals in his last 9 games that season with 6 of those games being goalless for him.
2020-21: 16 goals in 13 games up to the Winter break, then 8 goals in 13 to the end of the season with 8 goalles games.
2021-22: 14 goals in 14 games up to the Winter break, then 8 in 13 to the end of the season with 8 goalles games.
2022-23: 23 goals in 15 games for City up to the World Cup, then 9 in 13 games since the WC with 7 goalless games.
For instance, this was his record in 2020-21, when he scored 41 in 40 games.:-
0-2-0-1-2-0-2-1-2-1-4-2-0-0-2-0-0-2-0-1-0-1-2-2-0-0-2-2-0-2-0-0-0-0-2-0-2-2-0-2.
That means that his 41 goals came in 23 games and he failed to score in 17 games. That's a very unusual pattern for any striker.
These stats are actually very noteworthy, because it conveys the impression that he could be a flat track bully. We didn't buy him to score bunches of goals in games that we'd win anyway. We bought him to score goals that would turn draws into wins, and this is something that we're not seeing enough of.
