How to bulk up?

Are there recommended %s that you should be able to lift in comparison to other lifts for deads, squats, bench, OHP and bent over rows?
e.g. should be able to squat 85%, 60% bench and rows and 40% OHP compared to deadlifts?

Would be useful to see which lifts I was relatively stronger/weaker at

Hey fitness people, I'm thinking of adding protein shakes to my diet but I don't really know where to start looking, how much I should be paying or which brand is good. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

it depends on how you are using the protein mate, Do you even lift? (sorry had to get that in ;)) what sort of training do you do etc. Whey is great at getting in your system quickly so best for post work outs or some have before and even during sessions. Casein is a slower release protien and very thick so some use this with carbs to replace a meal and best for before bed and so on. PM me your goals dude and what your training pattern is and I'll send you some recommendations mate.

And as Simon mentioned ( really wanted to put 'says') protein has a very strange taste and it's not the best if your not used to it...... bsn, PhD are probably the best tasting and CNP for me are by far the worst. But to be honest if I wanted a tasty milk shake I'd go to McDonald's. I've had some that make you gip but paid best part of 40 sheets for it so it's gotta be had.... ;)

This any help mate ? Not expressed as percentages but gives you the actual weight <a class="postlink" href="http://www.exrx.net/Testing/WeightLifting/StrengthStandards.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.exrx.net/Testing/WeightLifti ... dards.html</a>

Re the rows, don't think you'll ever find anything 'solid' as much will depend on the degree of elevation and stance when carrying it out.

Thanks, that's great. I have worked it out from that.

I am pretty bang on with the standards for 'novice' except I am 10kg low on deadlifts.

My metabolism is such that whatever I eat I can't seem to put on weight. I'm skinny and I want to bulk up, but I want to do it the healthy way. I don't like the idea of supplements because they seem unnatural to me and I don't want to put any undue strain on my body. I'm in my early 30's by the way. Some stomach problems mean I would struggle to simply double my meal sizes.

Is there a foolproof healthy way to bulk up? Do I need to get myself down the gym to do this? Wouldn't know where to start!

Smoke for 30 years then give up.

Just had to be rescued when from a stranger in the gym when doing bench press.

Was only on 2nd set of 5x5 - oops!

Atleast your pushing yourself, the only way you will grow. Would recommend getting a spotter prior to the set though...

I think I may visit my local gym this week. As someone who has never stepped foot in one in all my life I'm looking for some advice.

What do I need to take?
How long should a session last?
How do I avoid enraging the gymaholics?
What's the best equipment to use for one's abs?

Truth be told, I am dreading it.
