How will Pep set us up?

........................Hart
..........Kompany.........Otamendi
Dinho.............Gundogan.............Delph
..............Koke............Pogba
.......Silva.............................KDB
......................Aguero

I don't think that midfield would get overran too often!

It's almost impossible to second guess what kind of team Pep will pick. I think we'll see different shapes and personnel every week.

I've seen a few people suggest Silva's days could be numbered because Pep doesn't like playing with a 10. If you look at this article, he seems to play Muller in every game in a variety of different roles. Muller is obviously a different player to Silva, each has different attributes, but the common denominator is that they are both supremely talented footballers and he can find a way to accommodate them in a variety of roles and systems.

I agree but Muller is a much better finisher than Silva so is much more of a goal threat. We have too many attacking players who don't possess a regular goal threat. I did a piece on Bayern a few weeks ago and one of the things i realised was that Silva might have a fight on his hand to fit in, which is something i totally hadn't considered a while ago. Having said that, Pep is very flexible and Silva is normally excellent so who knows. I don't see him being a 10 though. I see De Bruyne playing there.

Probably like this.....

-----------------GK-------------------

----------CB----------CB-----------
WB------------DLP----------WB---
----------------CM-----------------
IRW------------AM/10-------ILW
-----------------ST----------------

When the DLP has the ball, the centre backs push up alongside him and spread creating a high lined back 3. The WB's narrow their position a little to form a fairly compact midfield 3 with the CM. The AM/10 plays close to the striker and both wingers will probably be inverted meaning they cut in, which creates space for the full backs to overlap. The wingers will probably need the ability to play a crossfield diagonal which is crucial in creating an isolation or a 1 vs 1, once one side of the pitch has been overloaded. They also will probably need to provide a threat from outside of the box, as well as having the normal tight control you'd expect from a Pep player. 3 reasons i think Sterling will struggle to establish himself as a winger.

You might be right.

Yeh absolutely mate, Muller is an incredible talent, underrated in my view and offers a huge goal threat. As I said in my post, they both have different attributes, and for me Silva is the better playmaker. Infact, when he's not injured, Silva's the best playmaker in Europe for me.

If you look at the link I posted earlier, it seems clear Guardiola has been very adaptable tactically at Bayern. He plays a different system to suit each individual game, sometimes changing mid game. Muller has played a variety of positions, number 10, number 8, lone striker, dual striker, off both flanks. In the appropriate system, Silva is capable of playing in all of those positions too. Of course he doesn't bring the same goal threat, but he brings other things that almost no other player can.

There is always the chance Silva may get marginalised because he isn't as physically athletic as other players. But I genuinely feel if Guardiola is open minded and patient enough to work with Silva up close he'll realise what an incredible talent and supremely intelligent footballer he is. It really could be a match made in heaven.

It's going to be an interesting one with De Bruyne. He's obviously been bought with Guardiola's approval. Again I think he could play a variety of positions to suit certain games, but I have to say he doesn't strike me as a natural Pep type player, certainly not at number 10. He's not in Silva's league for ball retention, dictating play and being the fulcrum of the team. He's far more direct than that.

De Bruyne is most dangerous on the counter attack, Guardiola invariably plays high line possession football. I'm not sure he would be a natural fit as a number 10 in a Guardiola side. But if there's one coach in the world who can improve players, it's Guardiola. I can't wait for next season, I just hope he doesn't have to comtrnt with the Europa League through no fault of his own.

Annoying we have seen so little of Silva, Aguero and De Bruyne as a front 3. Made for it with Sterling maybe too, and yet we have struggled so much this season.

Any yet Pellegrini struggled to play Silva and De Bruyne together because he wanted to play the old guard. Guardiola will instantly move us on I am sure

I don't see Silva playing in a front 3 of any Pep side.

It has been stated numerous times that he likes his front 3 to be the game changers. The players who will beat their man and score the goals. When Henry was talking about playing under Pep he was saying how important positional discipline was in his system.

Assuming Pep will go 4-3-3 we are not far away from having the players at his disposal.

------------------- Hart -----------------
Zab -------- VK --------- Ota ------- LB
---------------- Gundogan --------------
--------- Pogba ----------- Silva ---------
KDB ----------------------------- Sterling
------------------- Kun --------------------

I used Gundogan and Pogba because we have been closely linked with the pair and there would more likely be more additions.

Also, quite irritating how people keep putting Gundogan as the deepest mid, that's not his position. His mindset is far too attacking for that role.

How can the fullbacks overlap if they narrow their position to form a compact midfield three with the CM?

I know the rags usually play with 12 men but there's a slight flaw in your master plan pal.
