How will Pep set us up?

Yeh absolutely mate, Muller is an incredible talent, underrated in my view and offers a huge goal threat. As I said in my post, they both have different attributes, and for me Silva is the better playmaker. Infact, when he's not injured, Silva's the best playmaker in Europe for me.

If you look at the link I posted earlier, it seems clear Guardiola has been very adaptable tactically at Bayern. He plays a different system to suit each individual game, sometimes changing mid game. Muller has played a variety of positions, number 10, number 8, lone striker, dual striker, off both flanks. In the appropriate system, Silva is capable of playing in all of those positions too. Of course he doesn't bring the same goal threat, but he brings other things that almost no other player can.

There is always the chance Silva may get marginalised because he isn't as physically athletic as other players. But I genuinely feel if Guardiola is open minded and patient enough to work with Silva up close he'll realise what an incredible talent and supremely intelligent footballer he is. It really could be a match made in heaven.

It's going to be an interesting one with De Bruyne. He's obviously been bought with Guardiola's approval. Again I think he could play a variety of positions to suit certain games, but I have to say he doesn't strike me as a natural Pep type player, certainly not at number 10. He's not in Silva's league for ball retention, dictating play and being the fulcrum of the team. He's far more direct than that.

De Bruyne is most dangerous on the counter attack, Guardiola invariably plays high line possession football. I'm not sure he would be a natural fit as a number 10 in a Guardiola side. But if there's one coach in the world who can improve players, it's Guardiola. I can't wait for next season, I just hope he doesn't have to comtrnt with the Europa League through no fault of his own.
I agree mate, the only reason i say a number 10 is because i don't see him playing as a winger, because he lacks the dribbling ability of the usual Pep standard winger, as well as the pace. He is a counter attacking player and so is Sterling, which being honest, does pick a bit of a hole in last summer's transfer dealings, considering we haven't adapted our style of play whatsoever.

How can the fullbacks overlap if they narrow their position to form a compact midfield three with the CM?

I know the rags usually play with 12 men but there's a slight flaw in your master plan pal.
They don't overlap at the same time. The midfield 3 doesn't become a 1. The two centre backs and the deep lying player push up to play very close to the CM. The wing backs will tuck in slightly til the point where one of the wingers gets on the ball. Because the wingers are inverted, they will cut in (to make the midfield compact again) and the WB can overlap in the evacuated space.

Yeh think we're on exactly the same page mate. I think Pellegrini thought we were becoming a bit predictable and wanted some attacking players who were a bit more direct and gave us a threat on the break. I understand the thought process, but as you say De Bruyne doesn't fit natually in to a side that keeps possession and plays in the Guardiola style. Someone like Reus or Costa would have been a better fit for us.

De Bruyne is a huge talent but he doesn't seem to have a natural position in a Guardiola team. Doesn't carry the ball well enough as a winger, doesn't work hard enough or retain possession well enough to be a centre mid, isn't as good as Silva in tight spaces on the half turn dictating play in a number 10 position. He might end up playing games further up alongside Aguero as Muller has done at times.

Be interesting to see, but one thing I know for sure, he won't expect him to do the same job as Silva at 10 or Navas out wide as Pellegrini does. Guardiola is a lot smarter than that, he'll figure out a system and a role that suits him I'm sure. I can't wait!

Probably like this.....

----------CB----------CB-----------
WB------------DLP----------WB---
----------------CM-----------------
IRW------------AM/10-------ILW
-----------------ST----------------

When the DLP has the ball, the centre backs push up alongside him and spread creating a high lined back 3. The WB's narrow their position a little to form a fairly compact midfield 3 with the CM. The AM/10 plays close to the striker and both wingers will probably be inverted meaning they cut in, which creates space for the full backs to overlap. The wingers will probably need the ability to play a crossfield diagonal which is crucial in creating an isolation or a 1 vs 1, once one side of the pitch has been overloaded. They also will probably need to provide a threat from outside of the box, as well as having the normal tight control you'd expect from a Pep player. 3 reasons i think Sterling will struggle to establish himself as a winger.

i like your formation. a bit similar like me, except play with 2 striker - little and tall combination. Aguero upfront alone won't work. he will be more deadly when he have a partner like Negredo and Forlan. i wish we sign Morata (or Aubameyang, if possible).

We keep getting linked with Laport and Stones We have Denayer return of course Demi is leaving but I cannot see any of the others leaving so could we end up with three at the back to accommodate the extra CB and get more out of the full backs going forward ?

That's just one phase of play though, a very good one but you need a lot more variety in terms of movement and abilities to get through a game, let alone a 60-70 game season. Which is why you won't see a single formation or team sheet the same throughout the season, there will be 5-6 different variations I believe from watching Pep teams in the past. I fucking hope so anyway, it'll be nice to actually have some sort of game plan and tactics for once.

Yeah he changes a lot, even through the game. It will be nice to have a manager that reacts to what's happening. Haha.

Just wondered what anybody thinks of the fact that many ppl say Pep has only been sucessful because he has taken over teams that are already supertalented, in other words he could hardly have failed. Will he be able to weave his magic instantly at City if this is the case ???
