How would you assess Rodri's season?

The narrative was he was purchased to become Fernandinho's long-term successor, which is why he draws criticism.

He's a smart footballer and very good technician but he just hasn't been done any favours by that comparison.

Rodri doesn't have the speed or the the pipes to perform that task.

Perhaps another example of a very good player not being quite the right fit.

Rodri put in one of the great midfield performances away to Burnley, but he's not come up against that much.

I got put down a few times just before season ended, IMO he hasn't got the pace to get himself out of trouble neither chase back if under the Koch

He is intelligent & knocks a tidy pass but in the prem the high press & quick counter he looks sluggish at times.

He is a very good tidy footballer but do I see him as Worldy or going to be im not sure hence jury is still out for me

We have been spoilt by Dino over the last few years & have we found a better player???

Not for me but let's see in this 2nd season

Needs a fast high press in front of him, something which is lacking when you play Gundogan or David Silva simply because they don't have the legs for it. Next season I'd like to see Phil/Bernardo and KDB ahead of him, with a strong centre back pairing behind.

Think he'll come good.

I think he's an excellent player in the right formation. |But he is very different to Fernandihno. Someone like Kante could have been a like-for-like replacement for Ferdy. I don't think Rodri is a box to box sort of player. But he is great at reading the game and is very effective in the pivot position. I think he has had a good season. I also think Gundo is excellent. But what I hate is a combination of Rodri, Gundo, and a 33-year-old Ferdy.

Normally he would have been gradually introduced into the team rotating with Dinho , but Laporte's injury cocked that up and he was in at the deep end , i think he has done OK , he will never be in Dinho's league we have been spoilt by our Brazilian enforcer , but Rodri will only get better i believe he will stamp his authority on games more in his second season, but he is better with more mobile players in a middle three , Gundo & Rodri should'nt start together.

His season was below expectations. As for a record signing, a 20M MD player would have the same season or better

Has too much of the Javi Garcia about him for me, tall, slow but a better footballer for sure. I don’t think he’d boss a midfield and do the Fernandinho role

C+ plenty of room for improvement.

Any new player needs at least 12 months to settle in, I've seen enough of him though to see there's a great solid player in there waiting to come out.

One of our better players this season along with Sterling and Silva.Immense recently against the micky mousers and Madrid so can do it in the big big games.

Just seen this on reddit about ball progressions per player:

Rodri comes in at number 11 in Europe, ahead of Kevin in 16th and Jordan Henderson at number 78.

This is why he is in the team, he isnt going to be chasing opposition players back as well as Fernaninho does because he has a different role.

I think if you dont like the role it is unfair to slate Rodri as he perfoms well in it.

Underwhelming, but I didn't expect anything more in his first season. If he's no better next year then we may have a problem.

Definitely room for improvement, however sometimes he did just muscle opponents of the ball, moved the ball effortlessly and dominated the midfield.

A Kante at his best can cover the ground 2 players can in the pivot and TBH, I would like that kind of player.

However it can be balanced with the attacking 2 have more legs and helping back.

Next season we need the midfield 3 to click again, like it did in the centurion season.
