I hate this arguement

yes he could have gone for 2 million in summer assuming he didn't sign the new contract that Hamburg had put to him. De Jong had verbally agreed that contract but hadn't signed when we came in.

If we hadn't come in for him he would have sign the said Hambrug contract and no one would be paying 2 million in the summer.

Do a search on the web, you'll find an interview with De Jong (Video) clearing this up. He was never signing for anyone for £2m, he was happy at Hamburg and was more than willing to stay they in turn were happy to keep him but they needed the money and he fancied the challenge if that were the case, when we came in he made it clear to both Hamburg and us that unless we paid now his market value he would just sign a new contract with Hamburg as they had been good to him and he wasnt forcing a move.
