It does seem barmy as 1-1 is hardly the end of the world. Effectively he's throwing the tie and while the financial rewards of the Champions League far outweigh the UEFA Cup surely there are rules about putting out weak teams.

4th Place in the league carries more than winning the Uefa cup.

The best players will, on the whole, want to play Champions League football, the money involved far outweighs winning the uefa cup, increased sponsorship etc etc.

The only thing is though that top 4 isnt guaranteed by any stretch. Also they arent sure to be in the champions league as they would have to qualify and there are some good teams that they could come up against. Ask everton. Bu they could have attracted some quality prior to the qualifiers.

Did Everton have a flock of players join because they were in the Champions League qualifiers? And remember that tanking in the UEFA Cup is no guarantee of finishing 4th, personally I hope they lose in Moscow and get overtaken by Arsenal now.
