Ian Bishop & Trevor Morley on their "rumoured relationship"

It's a bit bloody sad that this crap really got to Morley, maybe Bish coped with it a bit better. But it probably cost him a chance of maybe getting on the edges of the England squad.

English football isn't homophobic but no top flight player has come out since Justin Fashanu in the late eighties??? Wonder why not with our fucking scum media.

Got a lot to learn on that score from the WSL, their players and the entire mentality, I suspect.

As for the player who went on to manage City, Peter Reid springs to mind, I don't know either way.

We've all sniggered at these rumours, knocking around for 30 odd years, horrible the pain such snide shit causes.
That's why all the jumping up and down about Qatar was a nonsense. Not because they don't have human rights issues, but because the implication of all that criticism is that we've got it all worked out here and always have had. Thousands upon thousands of men have played football at the top level in this country and to this day only Justin Fashanu has been gay? It's statistically impossible. And he ended up taking his own life. So how tolerant are we, really, when we're pointing the finger? Are we pointing the finger because we really want Qatar to clean up its act, or just because we've got a toxic, racist 'national' press who can't stand the idea of a major tournament being outside the West and need a stick to beat the hosts with?

Which one?

DON'T MESS WITH MY TUTU.

I had a spell around the time when Bishop and Morley played when I didn't go to games as much as previously - or since. I knew that Morley had been stabbed, but, until I saw this, I had never heard any of these rumours at all. I don't remember the players getting stick, but I do remember Ian Bishop's arse showing incident at OT (I think). None of my City mates ever mentioned anything about any of it.
So, thanks for the education. Glad that both of them have managed to deal with it OK. Quite eye opening what Bishop had to say about the FA near the end of the interview.
Cheers.

Very interesting interview with Cheesey.
I wonder which former player it was who went on to manage City.... Pearce? Hughes?

Thanks for posting this Mad Eyed, Morley and Bishop were 2 of my favourite players from that era. The way Kendall and City treated them wasn't very good after Machin was sacked, they will both forever be legends to me as they both scored against ushited. I'm happy that they dismissed the rumours that were obviously started by ignorant tw@ts, but to be honest I couldn't give 2 shite's about anyone's personal life, that's up to them.

Also, Bishop said that the player in question had "ended up" managing City, which implies he wasn't and hadn't been our manager at the time he delivered the abusive comments. Morley was stabbed by his wife in March 1991, when Reid was already City manager, which doesn't on the face of it seem to fit with what Bish said.
I also don't think it is Reid who is far more enlightened than some give him credit for. He's actually a very liberal minded guy from what I know of him.

Don’t know how anyone can have a moan about the media with regards to this. Our fanbase perpetuated this as much as anyone.

It is sad that Trevor Morley was effected by it. Even back then it didnt matter to West Ham fans and wouldn't have mattered to us what the sexuality of our players was or is. Of course there are exceptions with bigoted attitudes.

A player's sexuality is their business.
