If you were allowed ONE of the following, which and why?

Trophies are what matter now we can compete
I agree with that to a point, but Champions League qualification would be a better indication of progress, and mean more to the club overall than us winning one of the cups. Given that option wasn't in the ones listed in the opening post, but speaking more broadly, football's getting to the point now where lifting cups isn't the be all and end all. For us fans, sure, starved of silverware for so long it would mean a great deal, but finishing 4th would undoubtedly be a bigger achievement than winning the League Cup. I don't think it should be that way, but it is.

A) We win the Carling Cup
B) We have a good FA Cup run but don't win it, say beaten finalists or in the semis
C) We finish 5th in the league, but within single points of whoever finishes 4th
D) We dick United 5-1 in the home derby
E) Messi signs in January

How about we win the Carling Cup, beating the rags 5-1 in the final with Messi scoring a hat-trick. Plus results in the league mean we are certain to finish at least 5th.

The rags claim it wasn't a fair result as they were still grieving after attending Taggart's funeral the week before.

I think I'd take that.

A - need to end the silverware drought.

you need to go into more detail really though so we are making an informed choice - what league position do we finish in if we sign Messi, or if we go for the Carling Cup win or the 5-1 home derby victory? Or is it just left to the gods?

I totally disagree with that mate.It might be to the suits in boadrooms but it should never be to us fans,we need to win something first and the rest will follow.

That's why i said "For us fans, sure, starved of silverware for so long it would mean a great deal".

To the football club, though, Champions League qualification would be more important. I'd take the FA Cup over us finishing 2nd, 3rd or 4th, course i would, we all would.

I can't believe there are posters who would rather beat United than win a trophy.

I take heart that there are only one or two, but have we really stooped so low as a club?

to be fair i agree, some people care more about them than they do City

I make you right on that, pardoe.

Champions League Qualification, and the money and prestige generated, is more important to the club than a trophy. It will attract the top players for a start.

But the answers here show that for us fans we want the silerware drought to end.

If the choice was to win the FA Cup or finish 4th, that would be a tough one. It would be the FA Cup for me but I'm not sure Garry Cook would say the same thing. Or The Sheikh.
