Ilkay Gundogan - 2018/19 performances

Had a great game today. Thought he dominated the midfield especially in the second half. In contrast young Phil started well but faded a bit in the second half.

He has shown what he is best at, pin point passes (also the corner for Ota!) into the box, with a fantastic vision and touch.

I absolutely understand why Pep wants to have such a good football player in his squad, also a fine character.

We just need a top DM vs strong sides, when/if Dinho ever can't do it anymore.

Gundogan is perfect cover for AM, also for DM vs weaker sides.
Where's the fuckin problem?

Credit to him 4 assists and a great game but he usually follows up such a performance with 3 ghostly ones.

To answer your question, the problem is he has 18 months left on his contract and giving him an extension means giving him an increase on his £120k a week wages. He’s also 28yo and injury prone, it’s just not worth it to keep him.

He’s a quality player but not for a top club in this league. Selling in the summer means we’ll likely make a profit, he’ll go to a club where he’s first choice, everybody wins.

Extending his contract doesn't necessarily mean a raise in salary.
However, I like him. Good footballer and football brain.

Pretty much nailed it. Gundogan is a much better DM than the CM role and is enough for decent cover. But he’s not the level required for the top games.

It usually does when you’re 28 but not 34.

I can’t imagine him accepting anything other than a raise. He just played a big role in a recording breaking premier league season and won the league cup.

Personally think he’s not even earning his current £120k a week wage. An increase is out of the question for me.

I find that last paragraph daft. He made a big impact in both the derby and against Liverpool, helping us secure 6 points.

You've just said yourself that he played a big role in our record breaking season.

We're lucky to have such a good squad player.

It’s just frustrates me so much that he has a great game and dissappears in the next four. We need some one to challenge our top players, not a squad player. Sane, Sterling and Mahrez there’s competition. Jesus is out of form but previously him and Aguero were neck and neck. Stones and Laporte are keeping Kompany and Otamendi out of the team. That speaks volumes. Danilo is finally given a run and he looks like he may challenge Walker. Then you have David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and ... Gundogan.

A little harsh but true, do you see what I’m getting at?

Nope mate, we need squad players to have our top players fit and fresh
for the most important moments of a season.
Cover for the top players by rotation.

Stones and Laporte are keeping Kompany and Otamendi out of the team.

Nobody keeps out anybody of the team!
Our philosophy is more like:
They are all part of ONE team
with a certain age structure within any part of the pitch, if possible.
You're refusing to accept rotation, although you are aware of the tight schedule in top football.

I know you love transfer windows.
You want 20 world stars plus a keeper, I guess. That's a bit too much virtual reality, human stars have certain ambitions.
World stars want to have maximum game time, as career-time is running fast.

That's why you need squad players. Look at any other top club. World stars don't want to be a cover.
That's a fundamental aspect of squad management and you have to cope with that, ask Txiki.
Apart from a realistic budget.

If City saw a better solution for reasonable money surely we wouldn't hesitate to improve the squad. No problem for me.
Until then Gundogan fits quite well. We'll see if he gets a contract extension by summer.
