Ilkay Gundogan - 2018/19 performances

It’s just frustrates me so much that he has a great game and dissappears in the next four. We need some one to challenge our top players, not a squad player. Sane, Sterling and Mahrez there’s competition. Jesus is out of form but previously him and Aguero were neck and neck. Stones and Laporte are keeping Kompany and Otamendi out of the team. That speaks volumes. Danilo is finally given a run and he looks like he may challenge Walker. Then you have David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and ... Gundogan.

A little harsh but true, do you see what I’m getting at?

We get rid of Gundogan and bring in someone to challenge thst will likely block Foden's path into the first team.

And i don't agree that he's a 1 good game in 5 player.

Nope mate, we need squad players to have our top players fit and fresh
for the most important moments of a season.
Cover for the top players by rotation.

Nobody keeps out anybody of the team!
Our philosophy is more like:
They are all part of ONE team
with a certain age structure within any part of the pitch, if possible.
You're refusing to accept rotation, although you are aware of the tight schedule in top football.

I know you love transfer windows.
You want 20 world stars plus a keeper, I guess. That's a bit too much virtual reality, human stars have certain ambitions.
World stars want to have maximum game time, as career-time is running fast.

That's why you need squad players. Look at any other top club. World stars don't want to be a cover.
That's a fundamental aspect of squad management and you have to cope with that, ask Txiki.
Apart from a realistic budget.

If City saw a better solution for reasonable money surely we wouldn't hesitate to improve the squad. No problem for me.
Until then Gundogan fits quite well. We'll see if he gets a contract extension by summer.

I disagree, who else is a squad player?? Only Delph and Zinchenko really.

You are making too many assumptions here. I love rotation. But don’t tell me Stones and Laporte are not the preferred CBs for example as Aguero is the preferred striker. Pep rotates but right now certain players are preferred. But that can change Jesus was preferred at one time and now he’s not. The point is there is competition and they are fighting for their place. Danilo was preferred for the Liverpool game etc etc.

I’m not saying we need to go out and buy an £80m midfielder but surely we would get £20m+ for Gundogan in the summer. We can add something small to that and go out and buy a player that is better.

That’s what top club do, get rid of players when it’s their time. Something we’ve struggled to do for a long time.

I’ll be disappointed if we give him an extension.

Maybe give Foden his game time? Maybe our new DM will share the game time because we’ll surely get one in the summer, could he also play there?

Whatever happens I just don’t want to see him given a 3 year extension, would be madness.

Anyway I imagine with a year left Gundogan will receive some offers in the summer. So he could possibly take those anyway if an extension isn’t offered from the club.

Has a good game sometimes 1 out of 5, sometimes 1 in 4, sometimes 1 in 3.... the point is he’s really inconsistent and a 28 year old should be anything but that.

Compared to other midfield players that usually play well and sometimes play bad Gundogan sometimes plays well but usually is average to invisible. Wouldn’t bother me as much but he doesn’t work hard and is always pulling out of tackles making his inconsistency unacceptable.

Where's 3 years come from? Our midfield is due an overhaul already with Silva and Fernandinho approaching the end of their careers, keeping a bit of continuity with Gundogan in there could well benefit.

I don’t agree at all with your assessment of the regularity of his good showings, probably one bad in 4 is closer to the truth.

3 years was an example. Surely we wouldn’t be giving a 28 year old only a one year extension. I imagine it would be something like that maybe 2 years but I can easily see other clubs offering him a 4 year deal in the summer.

I see your point in keeping him but both Fern and Dave will stay until 2020 by that time Gundogan himself will be 30 years old and given his injury history that’s already risky imo.

Depends he doesn’t necessarily have so many bad games, in terms of making a lot of mistakes, he just dissappears for long spells. Sometimes you don’t even notice he’s on the field. If you’re saying one bad in four than one would be good and in two he would be invisble for example.

We shouldn't be offering him anything. Hes not even remotely close to having 3 good games in every 4. 3 good games a season would be closer to the truth.

the only people that thinks he disappears are some of the people on bluemoon,he doesn't disappear at all,he provides cover for all our midfielders, maybe not as good but an established international(GERMANY),we need quality to step in when the others are out of form or injured,he really does nothing wrong but it seems hes the bluemoon boo boy at the moment.he is a quality midfielder and would get into most starting line ups in the prem, for us he is a squad player,do people not understand it isn't fucking fifa,we cant just have two world class players for every position nobody has that,

Arsenal
Huddersfield
Cardiff
West Ham
Everton

He was good to very good in all of the above, that's 5 of his 9 league starts.

And as mentioned above his cameos vs Liverpool and in the derby were excellent and crucial. That's 2 of his 6 sub appearances in the league.

Excellent yesterday.

Closer to the truth.

We need players to challenge DS, Fern & KDB imo.

We currently have only Bernardo. Foden is not yet at that level & Gundogan, in spite of his herculean assists v Rotherham, is not good enough.

If he stays, it should be as the replacement for the replacement, not as the 'go to' player.

We should have another midfield player who fans in general are excited to see, in the starting lineup.

We don't have room for one until either Silva or Dinho leave, we could bring in an understudy for Dinho but that's not the same thing. We should definitely be extending Gundogan's contract if he wants to stay in my opinion, plays all 3 positions in our midfield well even if not to KDB or Dinho's level.
