Ilkay Gundogan - 2018/19 performances

He was poor because he was poor. This is not a relative claim.

You somehow concluded he had a 'great game' and Gundogan had a terrible game. I wondered how you came to such an irrational conclusion about 2 players whose perdomances were quite similar. In my book, both unimpressive.

But I can see now that you are grading on a curve. Older players who went to the world cup and need replacement at their position apparently get bonus points for that.

Sorry, I grade straight merit :)

10 outfield City players covering like Fernandinho, we beat Arsenal comfortably, 10 outfield players covering like Gundogan, we get fucking hammered.

It really is that simple.

Stats are pretty much irrelevant in a game like that, but I'm happy to guess that Gundogan's & Fernandinho's were probably better than our attackers & that 3 of our defenders probably had better stasts than our midfielders.

None of that, tells the story of why we won the game. It was because we largely kept Arsenal at bay and therefore could impose our game, which wasn't at its best, on them.

8 of the outfield players did that well, one a bit meh & one poor.

Gundogan was fine on Sunday played his part in a difficult opening away game which we won comfortably

Has anybody mentioned the bit where he chased down Xhaka, slid in to get the ball off him and then put Aguero through clean on goal (only for Sokratis to hack him down on the edge of the area)? That's precisely the kind of thing people on here like to pretend he doesn't do so I think it's worth amention.

Oh sure I did but it doesn't fit the story some want to promote, so they chose to ignore it.

Generally, player performance discussions on here are based on individual reception,
which often seem to be based on feelings, memories, impressions or 2 minute match highlights.

I would prefer to discuss on video footage and match minutes. Makes it easier to discuss a point.
Links are still in place.

Nah, it's a little bit more complex ;)

Gundogan was AM and his covering would have to be compared to Bernardo's, no?
It's a different job depending on the position.

You know it.

Didn’t he start the set up for Bernardo’s goal too? He’s our new boo boy, we’ve always had to have at least one.

Bernardo was fantastic at it. Also sprinting down the wing 2nd half.

Yep, quite invisible first half, stepping up 2nd half. The lad is fantastic, I really like him.
And I guess you would like to see that kind of energetic movement from Gundogan.
But he is a different type.
He looks much calmer, maybe even slower, but he is doing a job nevertheless.
For sure a job Pep likes, or he (Ilkay) wouldn't be here.

Having rewatched the game today and not being under the influence of alcohol I thought his performance was okay. I'm just confused as to why he's not given the same allowances others are considering he's has minimal game time too?

The way it can be summed up best is if a German international is our biggest problem, then frankly our problems are good problems to have.

This, I don’t get it either. I rewatched the first half and thought he did ok also. Made good runs, launched a counter attack after a nice slide tackle to win the ball back, etc. Granted, he misplaced a pass on the break that could have led to a goal but so did almost every other midfielder. I just don’t see how others are seeing him as diabolical first half.
