Ilkay Gundogan - 2018/19 performances

Midfield dominating. Fern having nobody to make short passes to. Silva always wanting the ball. KDB being injured all season. Is this opinion?

you said our quality starts there, it doesn't imo, it starts with the keeper. Fern had plenty of options to pass to including Walker and Danilo who were in midfield most of the time with him, he was struggling with simple 5/10 yard passes like most of them were.

The team was poor yesterday, one or two had some good moments that was enough to see us comfortable against really poor opposition but blaming Gundogan for others poor performance is horsehit in my opinion.

Ferns passing was most definitely below par yesterday, I don't disagree. He normally has more options than 5 yard passes to the full backs though, Silva always wants the ball. Gundogan doesn't.

I just see Gundogan as the common denominator in our poorer performances. Maybe it is pure coincidence?

Let me ask you this, if what DeBruyne and Gundogan were doing was running away from Fernandinho then why didn't Guardiola pull them up on it? Could it be a case that what they were doing in pushing high to the edge of the opposition's area was under instruction?

As for your question, I've seen plenty of poor performances from this side that Gundogan played no part in.

Edit: I've just been reading back through and I owe you an apology, my first response to you this morning was rude and for that I'm sorry, I'm blaming it on Monday morning.

In our system he is very very good when fern out and he plays deeper, but is not very good playing in front of fern. He just doesn’t suit our system playing there.

He was better than both KDB and Fernandinho and I think yesterday's game is hard to judge because as a team we massively played within yourself.

He's been fine recently so this criticism of him is unbelievably harsh.

What did he do which was, well anything at all, at any time ?

I saw him intercept a ball 2nd half when Fern lost it shortly before he went off.

Anything else ?

Should we mention his forward runs ? He did that for a short while, Fern tried to find him & it looked like it would work sooner or later, eventually succeeded & he headed the ball to the keeper then stood there holding his head.
Then he stopped making so many runs.

Effective on 2nd balls ? No. Creative passes ? No. Keeping the ball moving ? No. He was stood marked most of the time barely ever moving between the lines to receive a pass (KDB also tbf) & Fernandinho had the collective creative genius of Kyle Walker, Danilo & Otamendi to pass to, so half the time was trying to force through passes which weren't there.

First attack 2nd half, the ball came to Danilo on the left, he looked up, forward, to the little hole that you would expect a top midfielder to drop into, & Gundogan was just stood there, 10 yards away from the 'hole' next to a defender, moving nobody, doing fuck all, not taking part in the game at all. Danilo waited. Nothing. Passed the ball backwards.

The midfield consisted of one man.

KDB has been out half a year injured. Gundogan hasn't.

I don't know in what world, anyone can view Gundogan's contribution in that game as acceptable.

When did this happen? Are you referring to the one that his shot was blocked for a corner around 5 minutes before ht? Don't recall this headed chance????
