There is a widespread belief on here that promoting a consistently fulsome appreciation of Gundogan's talents indicates a poster with genuinely superior knowledge of the modern game. Those of us who rely on the evidence of his contribution in cruder terms like his impact on the match result, general involvement in attacking the opposition etc are clearly missing the point.

Most people know that Pep knows better than them and are willing to use their brain to try to understand why Pep wants him around and picks him in the starting XI. The other think they might know better than Pep and are unwilling to admit their understanding of the game might be limited and this might be a reason why they don't see the point of playing Gundogan.

in a different position

So, Pep doesn't know the position that suits Gundo and the team?

Now that we have 1 fit CB it might be useful to have 2 midfielders who can play defensive roles if necessary in order to control games better. Instead of moaning you might try to understand Pep's reasoning beyond cheap explanations like Pep liking him more than Foden or other such stupidities.

Definitely categorize this poster under A for Apologist.

No, just a humble one who knows he doesn't know much about football compared to Pep. What's your explanation of the fact Pep plays him? Let's see your brain at work.

Haven't got one and like you am just a humble observer. I've watched him in every game he's played for us and think he slows us down unnecessarily. We just seem to attack better and defend better when he isn't in the team. It's all relative of course - we still play very well when he is there, although more suited to a holding role. There has never been any occasion that I thought De Bruyne, Merlin or Bernardo couldn't do a better job further forward. I hesitate to mention Foden but there is a case to be made that his development has been hindered by Pep's preferences in this regard.

He didn't have the greatest game yesterday, he was okay, some things didn't go off for him, his finish (or lack of) was unlucky he should have scored.

But... he is a great player to have in our team and did have some good defensive moments in that game, as well as good moments in controlling possession.

The problem is that he plays with Zinchenko and Rodri, and all 3 overlap too much in qualities. If he played with Angelino/Mendy, then he could more comfortable be in a midfield 2 with Rodri, allowing the left side to be dominated by a fullback/winger combo which he could then support.

I'm far from thinking that Pep does not make mistakes. Pep himself has his doubts about the decisions he makes. However, we should know by now that Pep is a fierce competitor and starts players who can do the job. Gundo was great for us after Ferna got injured in late February and was not available for many games during the run in. I think that it's not plausible to suggest that Pep plays Gundo only because he likes him. Obviously, he likes what Gundo brings to the table, at least most of the time.

If we have to play a CL final, I wouldn't pick Gundo in the starting XI. I would rather see Rodri, Kevin and Bernie in midfield. But Pep has his reasons to start Gundo and the best we can do is to try to understand his reasoning. In my view, Pep thinks that Gundo can contribute more than Dave to our defensive organisation now that we have a crisis at CB. Gundo can play both at 6 and 8 whereas Dave is closer to 10 these days.
