Who won the ball back the most times in this game?

not as much as he should have done. Ederson made the most saves last night, difference is he made as many as he could have been expected to make. Gundogan missed a sitter and multiple times trundled round letting Everton run around him, it's nice that sometimes he does his job and comes away with decent stats, but it's time for him to apply himself for a full 90 minutes and do it the whole game and get back to the level of the player we bought.

Watch the full game back, in the second half Gundogan was covering ground to battle for the ball more than anyone.

Rodri has another good game and gets loads of plaudits but have a look at his contribution in the game from half time to about 67 minutes - barely involved.

Gundogan was quiet first half, was hit and miss with the ball second half, and doesn’t link up well with Sterling on the left as they’re both a bit one dimensional, but he did not trundle around letting Everton players run around him.

Gundogan was by no means great and I think he is a different player in defensive mid, but he’s the boo boy at the moment and I think people are being overly critical of him.

It's my honest opinion, and I'm not as sold yet on Rodri either, very good on the ball but doesn't cover the defensive transition as well as Fernandinho did, doesn't snuff it out as well, which we ended up with the Laporte injury as a result of. The pair of them together is a problem at the moment. Gundogan covers the ground at times, but then ducks out of the tackle and Everton sprang several counters because they got out of corners because he wouldn't either go and win the ball or take the foul. It's his lack of commitment to either going fully or staying that means he's caught in no man's land "trundling around" because he only does the genuine hard press and stick his foot in a percentage of the time and the opposition can exploit the gaps and play out. When he's on it and committed he's so effective but too often he hesitates and ducks out.

Well, if he is as bad as you reckon then you have no worries as he wont be selected again will he.

We will simply agree to disagree

Tbf , when we have a fully fit squad he wouldnt be in my starting eleven , but i dont pick the team thankfully , but he could well be in Pep's staring XI , always rated him as a decent player and does a job for the team , but as you say some people have pinned him as not good enough , and yet would probably walk into most teams in europe
With one game left and everyone fit, he wouldn't be in mine either.. But that's a testament to how good we are, not how bad he is.

Rodri is not that type of defensive midfielder. He controls the game, he is not your all action midfielder.

There is a widespread belief on here that promoting a consistently fulsome appreciation of Gundogan's talents indicates a poster with genuinely superior knowledge of the modern game. Those of us who rely on the evidence of his contribution in cruder terms like his impact on the match result, general involvement in attacking the opposition etc are clearly missing the point.

i may not have a genuine superior knowledge of the modern game, but then neither has Pep, and he must be clearly missing the point.

Always amusing when someone takes a position which essentially boils down to "Pep Guardiola is an idiot, I know more than him".

I'm not saying everything Guardiola ever does is unquestionable, but if the best manager in the world thinks Gundogan is a great player and continues to pick him for 4 seasons while sweeping up trophy after trophy, maybe it's not him that's missing something, it's you.
