indie music

Kylie Minogue is the biggest selling 'Indie' artist ever in the UK.

Stock Aitken and Waterman bands/artists were.

She was always top of the NME 'Indie Charts' in the early nineties. A lot of readers did not like that.

Jesus christ I love the way people are using the term "indie" to describe bands being backed by millions. Indie is short for independent, or independent labels. The arctic fucking monkeys?? they are pop rock FFS!

Here is some real, old school, true blue "indie" rock:

It was always 'alternative' in the US, the I word was not used there.

bullshit it wasn't? SST, K records, merge,Matador (early matador) were all US indie labels at one time and that is how it was referred to. MTV was the only source to use the term "alternative" and only referred to bands being played by MTV. Early US indie groups mainly flew under the radar of MTV and their "alternative" scene, bands like Sonic Youth, Pavement, Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr to name a few. REM was one of the few "indie" bands to break through.

back in the early 90's all of those those were "indie" groups to me and my friends. Never in my life would I have imagined that the same term would be slung around nearly 15 years later to describe mainstream bands.

Those were all known as 'alternative rock' bands at the time, Indie was never used to try and describe music over there, it was AR or College etc
