I am a hard gainer also however it all depends what you want. If you want muscle gain then free weights is 100% the best option. Doing insanity you will lose bad weight but cut up for sure. It's all about what you want.
Gaining weight is much more about the diet than the workout (they say fitness is 70% diet, 30% exercise) - you can make any workout as a gainer as long as the food is right. You could do worse than buying a big bag of instant oats (cheap) and mixing 2 scoops of it into each of your protein shakes. If you get going and you still aren't gaining weight, then you need to eat more (still, the right healthy food though).

I think I will start off with some free weights and try and bulk up. Start eating more etc as from what I've read diet is possibly the most important part in that aspect. Then after 12 weeks of that try insanity and start cutting and getting fit.
