It doesnt have to be a viable device to cause stress, disruption and anxiety.....just a reminder of what can and will happen

A security alert near Antrim Police Station has ended after a suspicious device was taken away for further examination.

Police said it received a report just before 7pm on Monday of a suspicious object which they had discovered at the entrance to Castle Grounds facing Antrim PSNI station.

The area was cordoned off, roads closed and nearby residents evacuated from their homes.

The alert continued for a number of hours while the bomb squad examined the object which they later determined to be an elaborate hoax.

Roads were re-opened and residents permitted back to their homes by 2.30am. The object has been removed for further examination.

Inspector Neil Patton said: “This alert caused considerable disruption to local residents and road users in Antrim and I would like to thank anyone affected for their patience whilst we worked to ensure their safety.

"We are now carrying out an investigation into this incident and I would ask anyone who was in the Dublin Road area of Antrim on Monday and who noticed any suspicious activity to contact detectives in Antrim on 101 quoting reference number 1932 16/09/19. Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”

@AlexWilliamsGloves how do you think an election would go in NI?

I really think you need the Assembly up and running again.
What or who would it take to get it working?

i just dont really know what purpose elections serve over here...especially when it comes to a General Election.

It would yield similar results to what it always does...DUP and Sinn Fein getting largest...Alliance next....and whats the point of all the others after that??

Alliance will increase though. But like GB, itll be close between the 2 big parties with the more moderate party coming third....

Ive pretty much forgotten why its not up and running. Main issues being Irish Language Act stuff and Legacy Issues....bullshit basically.

It fell apart initially after McGuinness resigned due to Arlene Foster not agreeing to an independent inquiry into her mismanagement of the RHI scandal that cost NI around £480m.
The Irish language thing came later after an election that returned the DUP and Sinn Fein again but this time she only had a majority of 1, I think. They lost about 10 seats.
For the first time the Unionists did not hold an overall majority in the Assembly.
Brexit came along and the rest looks like pure opportunism on the DUPs part.

Whatever happened to the UUP. You could do with an SDLP or strong Alliance type party to appeal to all. The problem is that for the foreseeable future you can't see anything other than Sinn Fein topping the Nationalist Polls and the DUP the Unionist's.

Just asked the question as a split in the unionist vote could see Sinn Fein taking the first minister position for the first time.
I don't know what signal that would send to the unionist side, although theoretically the First and Deputy positions carry the same weight really.
I think local business really needs to put pressure on both sides. The emphasis needs to come from normal working folk that they need representation for things that matter to them and not self interest from a few.

"obviously" you cant tar all with the same brush, but theres a certain poetic justice in this, considering the DUPs fundamental christian stance on many things:

A DUP councillor has resigned from the party after it emerged he has been charged with sexual offences involving a child.

Former Mayor Thomas Hogg was suspended, but then resigned, the party said in a statement.

The 31-year-old is set to appear before Belfast Magistrates’ Court on October 28 to face the charges.

He has been charged with "sexual communication with a child and adult attempting to cause or incite child between 13 and 16 to engage in sexual activity", according to a police statement which did not name Mr Hogg.

Asked about the charges, a DUP spokesman said: “On Wednesday, the Democratic Unionist Party suspended the membership of Thomas Hogg pending the outcome of a court case.

“The Party has since received Mr Hogg’s resignation from the Party with immediate effect.”

Mr Hogg served as mayor of Newtownabbey from 2014-15.

He was awarded an MBE in the 2016 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to local government.

Caught half of the 4th Spotlight on the Troubles.
It really was a dark period.
Watched Pop goes Northern Ireland last night as well. Some really grim memories, particularly the IRA campaign in late 70’s. How they could call that a war I’ll never understand.

But the Spotlight program showed just how much collusion there was from the UDA RUC MI5, informers and agents within and going all the way up to the UK cabinet.

Who wants to go back to that.
I saw the latest rhetoric from a minister in Westminster tonight calling the EU stance as leaving Northern Ireland behind as a conclave forever and they’d never agree to that.
The irony. Where is the self awareness. That is pretty much how NI was born in the first place.
The only genuine compromise in the history of Irish/British diplomacy is the GFA and they need to be made face up to their commitment.
Not to is unthinkable.
