Is ADHD made up?

I can only go off my own experiences with the whole ADD/ADHD label and my belief is that the child's behaviour is heavily linked with their diet and there is no coincidence that many families I have grown up with around the area have not just had one problem child but have had many and they have all been branded with ADD and stuffed with Ritalin.

Bad Parenting = Bad Diets = Uncontrollable Kids.

After my father literally disowned me at 11/12 and I came back to my Mothers my behaviour was very erratic and uncontrollable.
This was not a medical condition but a reaction to parental issues.

A psychiatrist said I had ADHD and I was prescribed Ritalin.
I refused this and never took it.
Instead I got more involved in sport and Funny how without any medication just a consistent stream of sporting activities my behavioural patterns changed.

Ritalin is just the easy way out.
Feed the kids an healthy, balanced diet and provide regular exercise and they won't need that shit.
Very true.

Some people's complete lack of awareness of nutrition and what they feed their kids is nothing short of disgraceful. Poor nutrition can cause huge problems from lack of awareness, lack of absorbing information/lack of learning, lack of recalling information/poor memory, sheer laziness, hyperactivity, huge peaks and toughs in energy, depression, chronic fatigue, poor immune systems...

Exactly.... i used to eat packs of haribo for my breakfast, 24 bags of crisps for my tea, and wash it all down with 5ltrs of Sunny D

No wonder I was running around with the nickname of Psycho Ste as a little 'un haha...

Parents need to be taught more about children's diet necessities and quick basic food preparation rather than how to boil water for a pot noodle or how to open a packet of crisps.

I'll ask again. OP, do you have a child diagnosed with it?

I don't do no, I was simply posing the question and giving my opinion after reading a book with some doctors views on it, I also knew somebody who had it when I was at school and was speaking to him about it, he admitted that really he used to just be a twat and now he's grown up he doesn't take any medication and is fine.

Thanks for posting, that's exactly what i've read so it's good to know somebody who actually has experience of it in real life. Diet, the amount of sugar and the lack of exercise with children these days because of computers appear to be the main causes.

It's definitely real. However, it's also an overused term.

Like people who have a runny nose and sneeze a couple of times saying they have the flu, people are too quick to say a naughty kid has ADHD. There are some genuinely bad kids who haven't been disciplined or, as with many adults, are just cunts. But that doesn't mean that it's not a real illness.

Kind of like how the classification of "stress" was abused when it first came out and people were being given months off work due to "stress". We are quick to abuse terms that are difficult to understand to make things easier for ourselves. Now lazy teachers use ADHD to cull their classes of students they do not want to deal with.

The condition is real but not every person labelled as having it does.

what utter bollocks, teachers don't diagnose any child with anything what makes you think they do. real or not a child with adhd will be very difficult to teach and will find a classroom environment a very challenging experience. teachers culling classes? this requires an explanation please.

Honestly, don't expect one.

ADHD is a living nighmare for parents, carers, teachers and even other pupils /siblings. The symptoms are extreme and cause stress for all involved. I find alot of children diagnosed with ADHD also suffer from other conditions such as Aspergers, and other learning difficulties.

Is it real? as someone said above, that is like asking if depression is real. if any set of uncontrolled behaviours effect your learning relationhips and general well being then there needs to be a diagnosis so an individual can be helped. giving it a name helps this process.

Ignore him, he's talking bollocks.
I would love to see a teacher say they don't want to teach a child because they think they have ADHD.

You're banging your head against a brick wall mate. Most of the opinions on here range from the misinformed or completely idiotic, to the downright offensive.
It's nice to see someone who actually knows something about the subject but don't expect many to agree with you. The Sun has told them that ADHD isn't real and is an excuse for lazy parents and naughty kids.

-- Thu Aug 02, 2012 4:39 pm --

In the words of Half Man Half Biscuit: "Is your child hyperactive or is he, perhaps, a twat?"

I have no idea who Half man half biscuit is, but he sounds like a complete fuckwit.
