not really sure if i understand some peoples point of view about this. surely it's just a set of behaviours, if a pyschologist can match the profile of the condition to the individual then a diagnosis is made. as i said above diagnosis is only needed if it can help the child.
not all badly behaved children have adhd, and i have come accross a couple of children where i had to check that they really did have adhd because it wasn't obvious (ie they were not badly behaved, this also shows the condition can be managed). there is alot of cases where i do think, is this just an easy way out giving them a label of adhd. but this is not for me to judge as i am not an educational psychologist and do not fully understand how diagnosis is made, but i do know it would not be taken lightly.
some children are just hyperactive, it is a natural behaviour that most kids grow out of. but if they are constantly hyperactive and do not react to normal social conditioning and grow out of it then there is a problem.
with regards to attention deficit, some children really can't concentrate, stop talking sit still etc etc, which makes a situation like school impossible, adult life will be less problematic.
as for the reason, no one knows. diet is apparently a big factor, as well as general parenting, but to those of you who say it's just down to these environmental /social factors, then how come you sometimes have a family with several children and only one acts in an antisocial behaviour.
however my point is, YES ITS MADE UP, SOMEONE NOTICED A SET OF PROBLEMs AND MADE UP AN ILLNESS. the same is true for autism, dyslexia etc etc.
There is another condition called ODD (oppositional defiance disorder), that i was extremely sceptical as it just sounded like an extremely defiant teenager, however i met a teenager recently that met the description of the condition exactly. the child has many many issues and i thought to myself i wonder if he was diagnosed as suffering from ODD could his life and education be improved, as i said above im not an educational psychologist just interested.
