Is ADHD made up?

There's no doubt in my mind that it is real, but there are also a lot of parents who use it as an excuse to be bad parents. I've worked in schools for long enough to know, there are kids that genuinely have problems, and then there are kids that just love to make people think they have problems to excuse their actions.

I wouldn't say it's made up but I do think people are diagnosed with it far too easily as a kind of excuse for their behaviour.

And that is the point. Paul Gascoigne has it and other people have other brain disorders of which there are many.

The only people allowed to diagnose should be the real medical professionals.

He's fishing for the wrong shit then.
He has been online throughout most of these replies, my 2 questions to him included, no reply though.

OP, my son was recently diagnosed with this and for those who say it is too easily diagnosed, I have waited 8 years for this. He has other conditions too but behaviour this year has prompted me to get other tests done. He will soon be on medication for this.
After probably the worst 8 months i've ever experienced and wouldn't wish on anyone, I can assure you 101% that ADHD is very very real and is horrendous to live with as the parent of someone who has it. If you still don't believe me i'll challenge you to live here in place of me for 1 week. After 2 days you will be begging to call off the challenge.

If your OP had merely been a question then fair enough, but it wasn't was it. It was a question then a damning insight of your own that it is infact all bollocks. You are absolutely fucking clueless my friend.

Can I ask how you went about getting it diagnosed? Genuine question just that my little lad (who is 4) has some behavioural issues his mum thinks he may have mild form of this i think he is just an energetic toddler. Obviously dont just wanna proceed based on idle speculation and would rather get a definitive medical answer.

May as well ask if depression is a made up illness and why can't people just "snap out of it" or whether people with various other mental health problems are just a bit eccentric.

Well said PB.

I think it does exist, and I think it is a modern illness caused by several factors.

However, I also think that some are labelled with the condition when really there is something else going on. I deal with kids every day who have been diagnosed with it when you get the sense that it was applied wrongly.

I would agree with you that is definately a 'modern' illness. I don't know whether it is 'made up' or not, some posters on here are not idiots and have/are experiencing extreme difficulties and I'm no expert but I do know that this was not a problem in schools when I was a kid.
I also didn't know any grossly obese kids in or out of school; labels condoning bad behaviour and ill discipline have sprouted up of late and are now eagerly grabbed at by bad parents who can't be arsed teaching right from wrong.
It believe it almost certainly does exist but in a far smaller minority of kids than are currently diagnosed as a get out clause.

Thanks just wanted bit of advice from someone who had experience discussed it via PM anyway. Obviously GP was first thought just wanted to ensure i had explored all possible avenues.

I dont think it is made up, but the term is abused. Some people genuinley have it and you can see them struggling to do every day stuff due to it.

However you'll always find that there is some twat in your class at school who has it, and it's just an excuse for them to be naughty.

A small point though, no one in China or South Korea has ever been diagnosed with ADHD......

From a general perspective questions such as these are now arising far too often in my opinion. The stigmatisation of people with disabilities and illnesses that now occurs in our media on almost daily basis is making people think many heatlth and mental issues are just being made up or played on.

I am sick of busybody cunts like Anee Diamond on the TV spouting off about illnesses she knows fuck about because it seems to be the fashion to have a go and demonise the people of ill health. She was incredulous that 90 people are on incapacity benefit because of Acne, now i have been in hospital with people with severe acne and i can understand why they are incapacited, but what the fuck does a fat washed up mouthy woman now about a skin problem.

The same is happening with problems such as ADHD, people who suffer from it will become more and more ridiculed by people who know fuck all about it.

It fucks me off.

Yet you post this about alcoholism...

"if you are an alchy you will be a liar and devious ****."

"bear in mind most alcholics are fucking wankers with no will and no sense of place or honour "

you have summed it up there fella, we all reguarly take the piss about things that dont affect us but then when a topic gets a bit too near to home get all precious about it

you cant pick and choose
