Is Gaël Clichy that good?

Most who slag Clichy in this thread will be the ones who wanted rid of Kolarov in the summer, the guy needs a decent run of games in the side, Kolarov has had a good start to the season but from what we have seen over his time with us he is not as good a defender as Clichy.
I think id start kolarov for home games for the option he gives us going forward. Clichy is better of the two defensively but his attacking play is fucking awful. He sprints in to a great crossing position then stops and cuts back EVERY SINGLE TIME.

A fully fit Clichy is the best Left back in the prem imo

Behave - He's not even the best left back at City
Kolarov better than Clichy? lol

In my opinion, yes he is... and so is Karim Rekik. Clichy would be sweating if Karim wasn't away on loan

Agree with most. Solid defensively but weak going on dreadful going forward. It's really frustrating too, because Clichy is lightning. one of the fastest players in our team, yet just seems to lack the nerve in the opponent's final third.

That said, think he's been a reliable performer for us. Might only be a 7/10 player, but you got that 7/10 every week pretty much. But think towards the end of last season and the beginning of this there's been a drop off.

I'd probably give him the season to recover something close to his previous form, but if not. I would have no qualms with him being upgraded upon next summer.

Not really a player that you can say can't be improved upon IMO.

I don't think it matters who plays left back in Citys side, we constantly get over run down that flank. Kolorov didn't improve things one bit when he came on either. Against Bayern we were destroyed on that side and as nothing has changed since when we meet a decent side the same thing will happen again. We're carrying a few passengers at the moment not just at left back.

So who are the other passengers?

Problem with Clichy is he offers nothing going forward and Nasri and Clichy doesn't work down the left hand side as neither will attack the byline (and if Clichy does he only passes it back to Nasri.

Defensively he's sound though (aside from the odd game).

One of the best left backs in the country.

Agreed.
He is suffering a dip in form at the moment, but class tells in the end and he has plenty of it.

He is a cracking player when played in a system that suits him. How we currently play against most teams we need him to get to the byline and knock a decent cross in, but he a) doesn't seem to get to the byline very often and b) any pass he makes in the final 1/3 seems to go at a 45 degree angle backwards.

An amazing defender who would benefit if we had a player of Navas' like on the left hand side so he wouldn't have the pressure of doing what he isn't great at.

Play to each players strengths and the team will be stronger for it.

Hope he starts against Chelsea.

Clichy's main problem is that he is not naturally left-footed...he was converted to a left-back early in his career and it shows in his inability to put in a decent cross.

Kolarov is the other extreme: totally left-footed...capable of great delivery + occasional set-piece etc.

Most games we will dominate possession, so defensive qualities not needed so much...so Kolarov gets picked.

I used to think Clichy was the player for tougher fixtures, up against speedy wingers / mobile midfield etc... but he seems to have lost a bit of confidence + pace this season.

Plenty of issues with Kolarov as well...so I agree with those who say we may be in hunt for new left-back if no-one ready to step up from youth team.

But Kolarov looks in better form right now.

He's never been "an amazing defender", he's quite reactive and relies on his pace to get himself out of some situations that a top defender wouldn't get themselves in. This season he has been absolute litter, Kolarov much more impressive throughout, in both halves of the pitch too. This summer, one of the two has to leave. Kolarov seems to be quite ready to move on if he's not getting first team football, so I think it might be him leaving, but regardless, neither player should be first choice at the start of 14/15. Felipe Luis in the summer, please.

Clichy is quick and aggressive but he doesnt read the game very well , i thought he was exceptional when we won the league , he was also keeping rag big mouth evra out of the french team , but his standards have slipped and kolarov is a better option at the moment , would be nice to get Baines for next season , best left back in the premiership.

Not this season. Hasn't had a good game yet. He's never brought much going forward so he's been in the side for his defending. Now his defending has been poor as well. That's why Kolorov is playing over him despite being a poor defender himself. If we are going to win anything we have to buy a LB in January.

Yes, he is that good. Generally superb in his time with us, some people forget that.

Not hitting the same heights this season, coinciding with Gareth Barry being squeezed out of the team. Clichy is much more exposed in our current set up and whereas the right side is quite solid, we don't have a naturally left sided player to drift over and provide cover/help when opposition teams double up on that side.

Clichy on form is better than Kolarov on form. However, Clichy is playing poorly and Kolarov no matter what form he is on he will never be consistently good defensively against top sides. We need a new left back and it should not be Baines. He will be 29 by the time anyone signs him lol. Shaw would be the ideal left back for us. He has played fantastic in the Premiership so far only at the age of 18. Oh and he's English. He would be a potential leader in the future. I hope next January or during the summer window City sells Kolarov and gets Shaw.
