Is Gaël Clichy that good?

Fuck me are players allowed to be out of form or a few bad games and suddenly a title winning international left back is shit
Most of the comments since the OP reflect exactly that, that he's off form currently, but its not "suddenly", and he didn't win the last title, he won one 18 months ago.
I never said he won the title last week but I understand your point. Didn't read the whole thread was just putting tuppence in

The whole team won the title not just clichy. It's a legitimate debate to have.

I personally think neither Clichy or Kolarov is really good enough to be trusted for eg. in a champions league knockout stage away game.

If he was that good, why is Evra always the first choice in France's quad ?

A very good question and one i've often wondered myself ...

Of course it could well be that that Evra is simply the personal favourite of the French national team manager , but personally i think a lot of City fans do understimate Evra , who might be a bit 'opinionated' on occasion , but who is also a very good full back , who gets forward with pace , has a wicked delivery , scores the odd goal , and isn't too bad at defending either.

Evra is world class player who had one or two seasons dip in form defensively. Offensively, one of the best fullbacks in last decade or so..

Whether it's due to long-term decline, temporary loss of form or failing to adjust to Pellegrini's more offensive approach, Clichy has really struggled this season. It's not just a question of having an off-day against Downing still less of a nightmare against Bayern's great wing pair. He was in trouble against Hatem ben Arfa in the very first game and his failure to keep out Kim Bo-Kyung at Cardiff was alarming. Gael did well in 11/12 and seemed a happy chappy in those days but at present his performances are a cause for concern and it's only to be expected that this would be highlighted sooner or later.

A top full back who has maybe had a bad game because Silva and Nasri drift about a lot it does mean your full backs can get exposed a bit which happened yesterday.

To be honest he was a weakness for us in his last season at arsenal. then he did well in his first season with city and found his old form. But he gone backwards last two season. He a decent lad and a good player but he only had one great season which was the 2011 and 2012 season. Not been the same since.

He a weakenss for you if you ask me. Bayern munich game showed that

Shame he can't cross which is a major weakness obviously, but he's a quality defender and adds lightning pace, intelligence and class to the side. He's been an absolutely brilliant signing for us

I think he was great signing for you in the season you won the league. But like when he was with us at arsenal, he still loses his focus far to much. keeping muller onside vs munich was criminal. He did same once when he was arsenal when he let van der vart through for spurs in 3-3 draw once. Its something he never snapped out of it. Good lad though and no hard feeing when he left. Always gave his all and unlike nasri, conducted himself well when he left us.

If we are going to use Bayern Munich as a marker I would say are whole team was a weakness. Although I felt when I heard that Clichy should not be playing in that game especially coming back from injury the way Guardiola teams play
