Is Gaël Clichy that good?

The knee-jerk reactions on this forum are incredible.
Clichy is having a poor run of form, just like Hart and Nastasic.
Everyone of these players is a top class player, and they deserve our support, just like we show players like Aguero when he is not playing at his best.

then football today is done!! I would expect a top class player to be able at least cross the ball. I can actually predict what he's gonna do with the ball 9 times out of 10, prior to even getting the ball, which is proper scary.

Clichy is a good player. But he is not a great player. Defensively there are several in the league better than him, and in attack he does not provide that much either. It is a position we need to look to improve. Kolorov is better in an attacking sense but obviously defensively he is questionable. A combination of the two might equate to a player that is good enough for us. Baines is the best in the league in terms of overall defensive and attacking contribution. But with his age we should look at the younger options. Luke Shaw for me is where we want to be looking. English, young, likes to get forward and part of the best defence in the league so far. A quality prospect.

This is not a reaction. This thread has been running for a long time now.

Clichy has an extensive charge sheet. Poor clearances from defence seem to be a characteristic of his. eg. Derby last year and did it again yesterday.
 
There is nothing wrong with nastasic either. Laughable anyone could be having a go at one of the finest defenders I have seen for such a young age. and one who is set to be one of the greatest defenders in the world in the next ten years.

Don't forget how old he is, he is an absolute beast
 
As a team that usually have the lion's share of possession, we need players, including full backs, who can do something constructive with the ball. Kolarov beats clichy in this department all day long. Always has done. I don't think we should ditch clichy just yet, though the way he got skinned in the cup final and at Chelsea was pretty alarming. And whilst we're at it, can someone tell the strikers and attacking midfielders to attack crosses ? Fucking sick of us putting crosses across the 6 yard box and everyone being rooted to the spot. Attack the fucking ball !
 
Thought he was a good left back (defendiing but not attacking wise).

Then I saw him getting skinned time and time again by McManaman in the Cup Final and realised how limited he really is.

Needs to be sold and replaced by Luke Shaw, if possible.

Easier said than done now he has been given a 4 yr contract on no doubt good money.

We need a Lb anyway as kolorov only got 18m left on his and I think he will be off as soon as he can.
 
Him and zaba got rinsed too many times yesterday

Good player to have as backup, we need to strengthen the defence big time come jan or next summer at latest

Totally agree on Nastasic, he's young and will make mistakes, but he's very very good.

Clichy is well off form, and has been for a while, but form can come back.

Posts like these need to stop in my opinion. Im not saying there is anything wrong with him, but he also has a lot to learn. Jumping for headers and being a little weak in challenges at times are things to improve on for starters.

Yes you dont see many 19 year old centre halves but to say he will be one of the greatest defenders in the world can we just reign that back. As if he just turns out to be "good" that will be dissapointing. I hate these expectations we put on young players from a young age. Look at Johnson. Micah was also going to be "one of the finest defenders in the world" at a similar age to Nasty as well

Some of the stuff written about nasty is cringeworthy

Good player, very promising potential but that's it at the moment
 
Coentrao would make us a much greater threat as a team. Clichy's ability on the ball is non-existent and when we're trying to break teams down they will just leave Clichy free and double-mark someone like Aguero as they know Clichy can have the ball all day long and nothing will happen. However, throw Conetrao at left-back and we suddenly have a player capable of beating his man and whipping in a threatening cross. Means more space in the box for our attackers as they will soon learn they can't leave Coentrao unmarked in the same way they leave Clichy unmarked.
