so if a 5 year old misses a week or two of school their education will be irrevocably damaged? or a 10 year old come to that?

really?

Not the point is it.

Really?

If you truly think that why send a 5 year old to school in the first place.

well it does really seem to be the point in the context of this discussion

I'd imagine that i could send a 5 year old to school and that the 5 year old could miss a week or two of school and amazingly still have the potential to get decent grades in GCSE's a whole decade later

So why is a five year old on school then? If teachers aren't having an effect pull them all out. I agree that a week off probably won't make a difference at that age. But they are the rules of the education system in this country. So either abide by them, pay the fine or home school. You have ample choices.

We don`t send 5 years old kids to school.

Obligatory education starts at 7.

I was an August birth and in the September was chucked into mainstream education. I'd been three years old a fortnight earlier.

Luckily I was ok at getting along with kids and I was a clever lad.

No it isn't. The state fine parents if kids miss school. They can even jail them.

So your saying you can't home school??

No i'm not saying that at all (although i'd be interested to know the 'rules' for doing that).

The kid in question is 5. What the fuck is he gonna miss at school in a week that's so important to his development?
Getting on a plane or coach and going on a little adventure with his folks will be far more beneficial and educational. Hell, even if it was just a week by the pool in Spain, the sun and exercise (don't mention exercise and the National curriculum) do mind and body the world of good.
When these 'rules' were introduced it was, we were told, to curb truancy. Now it seems they are used to threaten parents, thus keeping up attendance records for which there's a financial bonus for the school/local authority.

Fuck the school i say. Why should someone (headteachers) have the power to dictate to a parent what they can and can't do with their own kids?
These rules also have another effect, and that is to deny poorer families the opportunity to have a holiday at a normal price due to the bastard travel companies holiday price hikes.

Well it`s rather Western Europe being copied in our part of the continent (with diverse results I must say) than other way ;)
Personally I like the fact that despite EU tendency to law unification, countries varies with their laws and rules.
I only expressed my astonishment about councils punishing parents financially for kid absence at school. There wasn`t my intention to judge education systems in both countries as a whole, because simply I have no competence to do it.

On the other hand john maybe the system sucks and maybe we don't have to just accept it when it clearly causes the average working person aggro and grief.

So if the rules are shit lets say so and get them changed.

thank you very much mate, fuck them with their targets and their money making schemes,i'm gonna go to war with the fuckers,i strongly disagree on this one,me and my mrs are great parents and would never do anything that would end up being detrement to my childrens education! i can't spell that great,i've got no degrees, but i get by quite well.We seem to have a booksheet/list of do's and don't and no way of adopting a common sense approach to doing things.Fuck their @do it this way' or give yer money way!

people even scream and shout and swear (in some cases) at young children when they play football,my mate told me how his 7 year old lads team had a fella screaming 'you're fucking shit' at the under 7's team! i blame Alex Ferguson
