Is Manchester a tough place to live in?

Manchester is a tough place to live for some, it has some of the worst deprivation rates in the Europe, the streets are full of homeless people, their is a huge problem with crack, gang violence is rife, the housing is in a poor state of repair, the city centre is drab, income inequality is off the scale, I am sure on average we die younger, the transport system is shite, public services are becoming non existant and now run by charitable organisations. It can be cold, wet, miserable and when the sun comes out people stop and stare at it because we rarely see it.

As David Bumble Lloyd said , if you cant see the Pennines its raining, if you can its about to rain.

Would i want to live anywhere else, would I fuck, it is home to the greatest football in the world, it is the home of the industrial revolution, the city of radical politics, the place of Marx, Engels and Pankhurst, the TUC, the Labour movement, the Co-operative society. It is a place full of history, great museums, brilliant art galleries, fabulous music, amazing universities, world beating health researchers. For a smallish city we punch way above our weight. We have a world class airport, we have Lowry, the legacy of the Hacienda, great restaurants, brilliant pubs but most of all we have fantastic people with a sense of humour, a wicked biting sarcastic humour, yet we are warm and welcoming, friendly but reserved, tolerant and open, casual and carefree but hard working and caring.

The city could be better, the city could be worse, but I am more proud of being from Manchester , born in Salford than i am of being anything else.

If people don't like us or love our city then fuck em, fuck em all.

I think your first paragraph could describe most British cities and a great many towns, sadly.

shit place to live. told my kids to get out of Manchester and the UK.
Great advice, you would have to be pretty blinkered/deluded if you believe Manchester is a good place to grow up and exist.I would definitely recommend the same, and will hopefully be doing so asap.

for me the weather makes Manchester a tough place to live in and I can't blame anyone born in a sunny country for hating our weather and british winters.

When we have a shit winter i really suffer from SAD. If i could afford it I'd live somewhere sunny abroad from October to March. I can't afford to so I wish i could just hibernate like a bear because short cloudy damp and rainy days in winter really get me down.
I remember my old man telling me that as you get older the winters seem longer and crappier. He was right. I hate the dark and perpetually wet months. It doesnt get that cold anymore I dont think, but the dark early shit is rubbish. When I finish work I will be spending as much of the winter abroad as I can

I don't blame you pal. Perhaps you can get on a packed foreign beach amongst top topless totty and post us some 'where's Wally' pics; )

I moved back to Manchester after 20 years away, living in some of the nicest towns and cities the world has to offer.
There is a 'take no shit' attitude in the air here that can be endearing and annoying in equal measures. I'm always on my guard as trouble is never far away but i also love the 'rebellious' nature of Mancunians.
Whilst living in different places i've been misunderstood by the locals purely because of the way i talk. Tell a Manc' mate to fuck off and it's almost a term of affection. Do it darn sarf and they can get 'confused' and a bit offended by the delivery.
I softened up a bit in my time away but soon changed when i came back. Being a peace-loving hippy stoner tends to draw the wrong kind of attention in the run down areas of Manchester.
Given the choice now of being a laid back, relaxed kinda guy slowly ambling around in the sunshine with one eye on the beach or a zipped up cagoule wearing grafter with both eyes on the scrotes and a 'take no shit' strut i know which one i'd prefer.

I spent two days in Manchester through work ten years ago and loved it. People were sound. It's not as if a player earning £1m a month is going to be stuck up a high rise, or an area you need to be able to handle yourself in. Some players are just fucking pussies. You are getting paid a fortune by the people of that city, have some respect you soft ****.

I've always said Bernado has to be the most pasty faced Southern European person I've ever seen, he looks like he lives his life in a windowless dungeon.

I can't believe the lack of sunshine in Manchester would be a problem for him.
