I was actually thinking about starting a thread about Milner as I was walking home, but you seem to have done it for me!
However, my point was going to come from a slightly different angle. It's about Milner, playing on the left. A bit of a dilemma, in my opinion:
On the one hand, it's generally agreed that he's very useful to have playing on the left against the big teams. He tracks back, makes crucial tackles against dangerous players (the tackle on Johnson in the box v. Liverpool comes to mind), and has the energy to burst forward on the break with Tevez and Silva.
On the other hand, you tend to only get 2 or 3 good chances against the big teams. Now, as much as I rate Milner's general game, I do find the number of moves that break down with Milner very frustrating. In the Chelsea, I remember 2 or 3 occasions where he could have slipped in little balls early to release other players, but he took the obvious route of cutting back, slowing the whole move down. My point is that you need to make EVERY BREAK COUNT, and I worry about Milner's decisionmaking in the final third, compared to Tevez and Silva.
Now please note that this is not a blanket criticism of Milner; as I've pointed out, I rate him, I think he was a good buy etc etc. I just think that it's a tricky situation.
Thoughts?
