Is Rooney the new Alan Smith?

Rooney has lost it, last goal in open play...... March, something out of gear in his head, but not much there to start with.
The only way is down Wayne, over promoted and over hyped with a brain the size of a sheep's.
No insult meant to sheep

As loathe as I am to say it, anyone writing off Rooney is either being very optimistic or very naive. The comparisons to Smith suugest the latter. Thankfully he's been utterly mediocre so far this season, but you don't become a bad player overnight.

Agreed.

What this season has done though is take away the 'untouchable' factor from rooney.

I never said he wasnt a good player but I do maintain that he cannot now be considered a great striker.

As I said in the first post he is dropping deeper and deeper to get involved.

Fuck, he's now being praised for a 30yd pass for a goal - so he's not in the front line now is he?

What I want to know is Rooney the most talked about footballer on here ? It certainly seems that way.
Yes I know I've bumped it up but how else to make a point LOL

Do you mean he can't currently be considered a great striker, or are you writing off a 24 year old player?

Either way, the Smith comparison was pretty ill considered.

I think he overachieved last season and will never get 34 goals in one season. I also think he will become more of a behind the striker forward and be more of a creator than a goal scorer in the future

Currently he CANNOT be considered a great striker. He's not scoring.

A decent player, yes, but not the one he's made out to be.

I deliberately over state the issue with the Smith comparison but the evidence of decline in goalscoring is there for all to see.
