Is Rooney the new Alan Smith?

Agreed.

What this season has done though is take away the 'untouchable' factor from rooney.

I never said he wasnt a good player but I do maintain that he cannot now be considered a great striker.

As I said in the first post he is dropping deeper and deeper to get involved.

Fuck, he's now being praised for a 30yd pass for a goal - so he's not in the front line now is he?

I never said that you never said he wasn't a good player ;)

Essentially what your saying about him not being considered a great striker is probably correct at the moment. But he isn't Alan Smith.... Not for one moment.

I do think he has lost his fear factor , I think he lost that at the world cup when everyone suddenly realised he wasn't Englands "saviour".

I'm more depressed at how little the rags have missed his goal scoring to be honest. So long as the goals are going in I don't suppose many rags are too arsed where they're coming from. He only needs to score 1 from a scuffed shot and he's back in the game and could easily net 10-20 between now and May in all competitions.

I hate the little twat but you can't write him off after less than 1 full less than impressive season.

I think most of us generally agree with the adage that "form is temporary and class is permanent", but at what point does perceived class fall into the category of "a couple of great seasons"?

Stevie Ireland is an example of how things can go very, very wrong for a player, and although I am not suggesting he and Rooney were ever of the same level of ability it shows that players are only great when they have produced performances over an extended period.

So at what stage does Rooney's dip in form mean we have to reassess if he is a class player?

The other end of the scale of course is a player like Sturridge who has never really achieved anything as a senior player but many still tout as 'the future'.

As a side note Balo' has scored twice from open play so far this season and has barely played yet people still question him.

But they do say first impressions last.

Perhaps we need to take another look at Rooney?

Berba scored more goals from open play Yesterday than Rooney has i the last 8 Months.

Even Aaron Hughes at Fulham who hadn't scored a goal since 2004 has the same amount of goals as Rooney this season.

I hope for the rags sake that he isn't being paid as much as has been reported.

It's funny how all them team mates he was slagging off for not being good enough have them top of the table. Hernandez was on top form earlier but is sitting on the bench while Roons misses chance after chance. Even Berba was left out against Arsenal and hes the top scorer in the prem. It can't be doing his confidence/self esteem to much good.

Funny how Utd could afford not to sign Tevez as he and Rooney were similar players and Rooney was perceived as better.
Their performances and goals scored are miles apart now. The difference is alarming - for them.

Played an incredible 50 yard pass today apparently.

Does one 50 yard pass equate to the sort of valuations they were putting on him - £50 million +.

At the time they were saying he was the best in the world he was going through a six month spell where everything was going well and he was scoring. When you look at people like Messi he hasn't stopped scoring. The newspapers wouldn't have rated Rooney better than Messi if he hadn't been playing for the rags and also was England's only hope.
