Is Shay Given the best keeper we've ever had? If not who is?

The first keeper I ever saw playing for city was Alex Williams, and just reading a post above about the racial abuse he encountered got me thinking.

We've had 2 black keepers to my knowledge, in Williams & James. Now I was thinking whilst at the Villa match the other night how few black keepers there are, given that in outfield positions, I would say its close on 50-50 in terms of racial representation between black & white players.

So I was wondering if anyone could think of any other clubs that have had 2 or more black keepers.

Oh, and to throw another hat in the ring that I haven't seen mentioned, I give you Arni Gautur Arason, who had a fine outing in the 4-3 FA Cup comeback against Spuds, but only played once more for the club as far as I recall. Why is that guy not a cult hero?

But in all seriousness, its gotta be Bert all the way, surely.

Lots of posts about it , but Bert Trautman has to be the number one.

I never saw him play, but my dad, who watched City from the 1920's always said he was the best player, ever, to pull a City shirt over his head, and he watched City right through to this century, so he saw some good 'uns.
never said he seen him play smart arse just that when you talk about who was the best player in any area certain players come up like bell etc who you might not have seen but heard through your dad about how good they were

I'm no smartarse, but when you know someone who has been watching City avidly since the 1920's, and you ask them who has been City's best player, ever, and they say Bert Trautman, it kind of sticks in the memory.

I have watched City since 1967, and the best player I have seen is Colin Bell.

In the early '70's, when I was a teenager, there was a vote for the best player, and Bert Trautman won it by a distance.

I respect that. Colin Bell came second.

Eric Nixon made the best ever save I've seen from a City keeper.

On the whole though the best City keeper I've ever seen is Joe Corrigan in his mid 70's pomp.

corrigan for me too, but weaves will always be up there if for nothing else other than the play off final penalties and the tongue out canter around the pitch after it

Joe Corrigan, after a poor start got his chance due to Keith Macrae breaking his litttle finger and he took the chance with both gloves.Fantastic goalie.....but Keith Macrae was superb too.The only thing is, he was a little small, but he was so quick to the ball. Can`t say I ever saw him make a mistake.
But if you want legends then it probably has to be Trautman.

Keith Macrae was my hometown's keeper and although I remember being disappointed at him leaving, I was glad he went to City.

He was brilliant

Corrigan for me - he was on of my boyhood heroes and i was always him when i had to go between the jumpers!

Harry Dowd was in goals when I first started watching City in '66, and I remember been told how he once broke a finger in a game, so he carried on at centre forward and scored - the opposite of what Quinn did. Not heroics of Trautmann proportions, but certainly an unusual event.
